I have a 400 and it states that high octane should be used. It's my toy so the extra cost of V Power etc doesn't bother me but at the end of the day it's a high performance engine so deserves the best. I've got a friend who has had a 911 DB7 Vantage and two DB9's and has only used normal unleaded with no issues. Personally I would only use high octane.

The sticker next to the filler cap normally states 98 Octane. Most super is 97 and I have been using this without much issue. Just avoid the supermarket fuels.

Highly controversial opinion follows...

High performance engine? Really? I don't think anyone would ever question the affection that I have for the marque but at the end of the day its a pretty ancient lump putting out about 55-60 hp per litre.

Yes, the sticker says that you should use 98 RON but 95 works fine too - the sticker also says that you should use Mobil One but I'd rather not p*ss money away unnecessarily and so just use a decent semi-synthetic - it doesn't stay in teh block long enough to get too old. biggrin

Some people swear that they can tell one hell of a difference between 95 and 98 RON fuel but to be honest mine seems to run absolutely fine on either so normally I run mine on 95 and throw 98/99 in there if I know I'm going to be giving it some beans (but - to be honest - I don't reckon I could tell you reliably whether mine's running on 95 or 98 RON unless I actually knew what I'd put in last).

Mine also seems to run perfectly fine on 95, In fact sometimes I find that it seems to get hotter when running super unleaded.

I get a lot more explosive exhaust noises on deceleration using 97 instead of 95 if that helps you any. I usually go 95 though, as I get through quite a bit of it - then feather the throttle if I want fireworks on demand. Mine has been on 95 for a good number of its 60k miles, it also has a Mark Adams map, doesn't seem to adversely affect anything.

It all depends how your ignition timing is set. Higher octane means you should be able to run a tad more advance without knock.

Putting in a higher octane will do nowt power wise unless you take advantage of it by altering the timing. All it will do is hurt your pocket.

98 octane is massive improvement over 95
More mpg
Cleaner burning
More bhp
Cleans fuel system and injectors
Smoother idle
Better running through town

This is bullst but it's what some people want to hear.
Reality is that's its all in your head and you think it's better,
Unless you're running higher compression and more advance on your ignition, then and only then you might get a small gain

I've always believed the hype to be true, cleaner running, better MPG etc.

The chap I bought my Chim from said he'd only ever run her on V-Power as part of the Mark Adams chip upgrade meant it would run best on higher octane fuel getmecoat

I always understood the 97 octane fuel was designed for modern supercars with lots of electronics wot nots and an older car or standard road car wouldn't benefit from using it.
