Any good suggestions of wide open spaces where I can practise things like power slides. Has to be legit, as in not somewhere where I will get in trouble by police or private land owners.

I'm thinking of something like a disused airfield. Not interested in spending hundreds of pounds on track days as I couldn't afford to go regular and often (the best way to learn).

There must be somewhere like this in the UK. I am based in Reading and Bradford, two opposite ends of the country, so hopefully there are a few options available.

Never heard of skid pan training before. What's that?

Airfield day? Sounds like a marketing thing to get half a grand out of you for the day.

What I'm looking for doesn't have to be conventional. There must be some absolutely ace piece of little known land somewhere that's perfect for practising skids.

I just feel suffocated by modern motoring. Either stick to the rules of the road where there are so many other motorists that it would be less frustrating to skateboard, or dig your pockets to go to somewhere where you can let yourself go a little bit but not very much. I want to go somewhere where I can go absolutely mental, safely and for free.

I found an abandoned airfield just last week with the same intentions OP. Unfortunately it was too potholed to have fun on, which was a shame as it had a ~1400m straight.

It wasn't too far from Bradford either.

I'll bookmark this incase anybody else has a decent suggestion.

Stottyzr I suspect potholes will be the main issue with most abandoned and unmaintained airfields frown

I wonder what would be the best way to find what we want ourselves. Large grey areas on google maps maybe?

Norfolk Arena drift day in Kings Lynn. A whole day on track to do as much skidding as you like for £40, including instruction. Want to pull the handbrake on at 50mph? It's fine, they'll even teach you how. Want to do a scandinavian flick in to a 360 spin and carry on driving? They'll show you that too.

Santapod runs a similar thing for the same money called Drift What You Brung.

For a less drift orientated day out try Barkston Heath in Lincs. Javelin Trackdays charge less than £100 and you'll get the handling course for as many laps as your tyres can handle (I wore out 8 rear tyres there in one day). Drive round the corse how you like - ragging your FWD car to it's limits or linking up the whole track in a smokey drift.

Sorry none of those is free, but I can't see why you would expect to use someone else's land, plus safety provisions (marshals, fire extinguishers, gates to keep the public out) for free. They are all cheap though.

I'll look into the Norfolk and the Santapod thing.

I wasn't expecting somewhere free and maintained. I'm talking about somewhere deserted, not maintained. Maybe a piece of road that was tarmaced for public use and then the council ditched it. Or a disused car park. There absolutely must be somewhere like this in the uk and someone out there is having a wail of a time on it right now with all their mates.

There are plenty of places like this, but the locations are kept off the internet so that people are still able to use them.

Those two sentences are at odds with one another - these pieces of land, if they exist, belong to someone (or some company or authority) and it won't be legit to dick about without permission.

I feel exactly the same, I want to rag my car around without putting anyone or anything at risk, learn what it can do and how to control it and have fun, but the fact is to stay legal you're going to have to pay for the privilege.

This thread has been really useful for me, gives an idea of what it about.
