After awful experiences with various botched repairs, my dad has had enough of his subaru forester and has decided to get rid of it, so he's looking for a new car and has asked me to help him

His requirements are as follows:

Under £15k (he's also looked at cars as low as £2k though, so that's just a maximum)
Auto
Comfortable and quiet on long drives
Leather interior
Reliable (this is an absolute must, thanks to his current car he has an absolute horror of things going wrong)
Under 10 seconds to 60
MPG isn't a concern as he does under 5k miles a year

He'd also ideally like something no larger than the forester, and AWD, but these are not set in stone by any means and he could easily be convinced to get something RWD and smaller/larger

I suggested going onto the BMW AUC site and looking for a good E46/E90 330i as it'll be covered by the warranty and seems to meet all his requirements. He's not averse to that idea, but wants to look at other options (including buying back a car he had years ago and loved, a ford explorer....).

He also likes old Jags, but I've warned him that they're likely to not be much more reliable than his forester.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would like to see them smile

Another, later Scooby?
Worth nowt, if he isn't bothered by MPG.

Rest of the world is.

Sadly.

Ignoring RWD/AWD. How about a Saab 9-5 HOT? Auto and estate could be a good shout for him. Very quiet and comfy, under 10 secs etc.

That's parent abuse.

Get him in a nice XJ. You know it makes sense.

A nice S500 or S600 should be good.

Your Dad was very unlucky to have problems with a Forester. I am intrigued to know exactly what, as Scoob Foresters are generally considered tough and virtually unburstable. Did he just get a bent damaged car?! My suggestion would be a £15k Turbo Forester!..

One for the brave, in my experience.

How old is the Jag he would consider? Older Jags tend to be mechanically reliable - it's rust that kills them.

If 2seats are enough then an r129 convertable would be very nice.

£10k-£15k would give you alot of cars to check out. Give it a full service of everything, oil, filters, gearbox+diff oils, splarkplugs, ignition leads, distributor cap and rotor etc, and it should be reliable, comfy and shouldn't cost to much to run as alot of major work will have been done already.

Off the top of my head, complete failure of gearbox, clutch, starter motor, 2 shocks (£600 each) and ABS sensors. There was even more but I can't remember exactly, basically he's had enough. He bought it on 100k with little history so I guess that's just what happens, but one things for sure, he doesn't want another subaru. In my opinion, he should keep it because there can't be too much left to go wrong but if it goes wrong again he'd blame me for convincing him to keep it so I really can't be bothered.

He looked at one as old as 1991 - a Daimler Sovereign which was remarkably rust free, but a few electrical issues put him off.

Tell him to persevere with the Jags, that'll keep him happy if they do have minor issues.

Well I didn't even have to tell him, he's asked me to take a look at this tomorrow as it's near my flat

Have already warned him that it'll not be the cheapest car in the world to run but I think my advice has fallen on deaf ears tongue out
