Rather than have a rant about other inconsiderate road users and prompted by another thread I thought I'd start a "positive" driving habits thread

Two related things I do all the time....

- Sitting in a Q at might - I switch to side lights from dipped beam (mainly because I leave a sensible space between myself and the car in front)

- Putting an Auto in Park at the lights (handbrake is rubbish and foot operated) so I don't sit with my foot on the brake blinding cars behind (mostly Night time but it's become a bit of a habit day time too)

Anything you do that you think is along the same lines?

expecting the thread to sink but here's hoping biggrin

I don't drive but i notice that when my dad joins a motorway and its a lorry/coach that moves over to let him on, he tends to flash them back in when they have enough space.

Put my hand up to say thanks to people who pull over on single lane roads for you.

Good one

I notice that the acknowledgement of indicator up down and up again seems to be less common these days as a thank you to other drivers (although a polish registered lorry acknowledged me letting him out of a lay by the other day so maybe it's just UK drivers!!)

Have you tried to do it on the new style "soft touch" indicators? Anyone behind would just think you were trying to cancel them ineptly. wink A flash of the hazards is easier.

I certainly never go slow enough up/down/along a slip road and into lane 1 that a lorry might have to pull into lane 2 to let me do it, I match my speed so that I can slot in without causing anyone to have to slow, speed up or change lanes. It's not difficult, except that it clearly was for that dozy bint joining the M1 in front of me this morning; one of these fking morons who dithers about on the slip road then brakes near the end cos they're scared of something in lane 1 which is doing about 55. GRRRR!

Yep - thats fine too - none of my cars have soft touch indicators and I can never remember where the hazard light switch is on them either

Notice when an artic/HGV is making a turn into the road/a yard, stopping well back so they can do it rather than dribbling past like the rest of the mongs on the road and holding everyone up for far longer. Minus points for the tits who overtake whilst I'm demonstrating such courtesy.

I refuse to queue across a junction ie prefer to leave a gap so people can get out. Constantly amazed at all the fools who don't do same thereby blocking in everybody trying to get out. Then when I pop my horn at their stupidity they also get annoyed ffs ...

Why do you get to decide that the people queuing behind you are less important than those joining from a side road?

Er, because there's a queue in front so nobody's going anywhere anyway?

I give HGVs/large vehicles space on multi-lane corners, particularly on a roundabout where two narrow lanes turn right. I might be inconvenienced for half a second but it allows the trucker to complete his turning without concern. Every single time I've done so (there's one such roundabout quite near my house), the trucker has pulled well over to the left at the merge point a bit further up to allow a couple of cars to get past.

I also leave space at junctions to allow cars to pull in/pull out, usually make obvious gestures to show they're free to pull out.

Where space allows, if I'm overtaking two cars in L1 on a motorway (in L2 obviously), I love seeing a closing gap between two cars in L1 and pulling out further into L3 so that the slower overtake can take place without hindrance. If L3 is busy I'll just put my foot down momentarily to get past the cars quickly. DM - yes I know a child may run out from between two cars doing 70 but fk em.

Somewhat odd but I also flash my hazards for half a click before I run my windscreen washers on a motorway. If anything, it'll wake the driver behind me up so they know what to do when my screenwash peppers their screen, rather than floundering before finding their wiper/washer controls.

I'm forever flashing people out of junctions when traffic is busy. Karma and all that.

I've found people being more courteous to me lately, probably because I'm no longer in a BMW

If I'm in L2 overtaking a Vehicle A and I notice that the car I'm overtaking is closing in on a slower Vehicle B in L1, and I won't be able to fully overtake A before A will need to move to L2, I move over to L3 (if it's free) in an effort to not impede A's progress, so Vehicle A doesn't have to lift and wait for me to fully get past before it overtaking B.

I tend to try and maintain lane discipline at all times, even when pressing on a bit, so I really appreciated it when a couple of times, someone moved over to L3 anticipating my progress. It is a pleasant surprise when you are the recipient of this courtesy. I don't mind when someone is overtaking me with a small speed differential on the M'ways, if they are able to anticipate my movements and give me space too. It is only annoying when they are forever stuck in your blind spot with a free L3 causing you to change speed/brake. smile

ETA: A poster above mentions the exact same thing. Great to see! More people need to do this!

Thing is, that would be fine if ti was generally the case, but I see it often when the 'queue in front' is for traffic signals. I have seen the 'stopper' sit and let people out of the side road for a full cycle of the lights, so the cars behind him are delayed more than they need be. I think these situations should be merge in turn, not some 'helpful' 'courteous' annoying deciding to hold up one lot of cars in favour of another.

It may be because he is 'nice' and 'courteous'?

Just maybe.....
