Ring Trip - May 2013
Discussion
Hi,
I'm planning a trip to the ring in May, 10th - 13th. With some friends who have been before. It's my first time at the ring, I'm half excited, half scared - on balance I think that's not a bad way to be.
I've looked at the calendar so I know there are TF days on that weekend, I've booked the hotel and have given myself a couple of days to play in the surrounding area doing touristy stuff as well as having a day at the ring. I've also looked into getting a Sparco club X1 (fit dependant) full face helmet as I plan to do a few track days in the UK as well.
I'm just wondering if anyone else from here that has been before is likely to be about? What I'm really looking for is the opportunity to either follow someone experienced at the ring round (friends have been but it was a while ago), or even blag a passenger lap before I go out on track? I'm not fussed about setting personal best times, or banzai laps, I just want to get out there and have fun as safely as it's possible at the ring.
Sound feasible?
I'll be in an E30 325i. Only mods are spots suspension and red stuff pads.
Thanks all.

Get your ticket, ditch any friends/Go-Pro's or stopwatches from your car, enter the circuit and pop your right indicator on....and leave it on all the way round, hog the right hand side of the track, when you've got nothing ahead or behind you....play a little....when something approaches from behind...let them past. Enjoy your first lap and take a good 15 mins or more to do it. Do NOT try and follow someone, they have different skills/power/brakes/grip etc than you so it's a futile game until you've got a good number of laps under your belt (you won't get there on your first trip).
It's a fantastic road to blast round, just give it some respect and ignore any attempt to set a world beating lap time.
Cheers
Jim

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one feeling like this - almost to the point of not wanting to go sometimes!
My trip is planned for June and then off to Cologne for 2 nights afterwards.
Lots of sensible advice IMO on this thread, I'm not going out to set lap times, I just want to enjoy a great road.

Rent a car from www.Rent4Ring.de
I only drive my own cars on Trackdays at the Ring now really.
For public sessions I always Rent now. You are mad not to Rent a car and be properly covered for potentiall third party claims against you in my opinion.

Thanks all for your comments & I'm really grateful for all the offers of passenger laps. I will hopefully get to meet some of you there and if so will most definitely take some of you up on your offers.
I will absolutely not be trying to set a time. I'm going there to have fun. I hadn't planned to go to the ring at first, it was initially just a road trip to Germany in my old car...
Any other tips or advice also gratefully received. I'm really starting to get excited now!
For those that have indicated you'll be there I'll PM my details so you know who the guy with his right indicator on is!

I had a few moments where I nearly binned it and decided to do a track day at Oulton Park or something instead, but to be honest I think I would really regret not going. Just make sure you are fully aware of the risk you are taking... If your old BMW drops some oil or fluids.. a biker goes down on it and ends up a Quadraplegic...
You are in for a world of trouble. Pls make sure you understand this... thats why I now rent for TF sessions and do the Destination Nurburgring trackdays with Darren from here in my own cars.
I've been to going to Ring for over 10 years. Love the place! You will have a wonderful time. Fabulous place and experience. Enjoy.
Not long now till my next track day there... first week April. Very excited

You know how close Spa is as well to the Ring? Awesome track thats well worth visting at same time.

You sound like you are going with the right attitude Kemlo, many people are amazed at the difference of being there and playing with the x box. DO NOT try following someone who "knows" the Ring,we had a guy last year who was insist ant of his knowledge so hired a Porsche,he then talked another Porsche owner into letting him follow around the circuit. They got as far as Hohe Acht before the experienced driver realised his follower was no longer there behind him,he'd parked up in the Armco for a bit of a rest!. Don't do it,it is too risky, just enjoy it and the surrounding roads,it is one of lifes "must does". I will be back there by then, hopefully permanently! I will absolutely not be trying to set a time. Right, next question...
I'm now thinking of doing a steady lap in my own car so I can say I have done it, and then renting a car from rent4ring, RSR or rentracecar. (Any preferences here?)
Does anyone know if they do better rates if you chance it and turn up on the day to see what they have got left? I only ask because I had thought about just going for the 4 lap package to keep costs relatively low, but they only seem to do those on weekday evenings?
yes, before you check my profile, I am from Yorkshire and it is for counting, not for spending...
Thanks all.

Not being biased but would recommend having at least one lap of instruction, but do not expect to learn much of the circuit. Do not get yourself wound up by the lack of knowledge,it takes a bit longer than four laps!http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/imgs/4.gif
It is a hugely satisfying place to drive, but you do need to have an idea of the tricky sections, hence the instruction suggestion.Rental will depend on what you think you'll need really,a car capable of averaging say,60mph will seem very quick ,[in some places] but dreadfully slow in others.

Rent4ring are best , lowest costs if things were to go wrong and the cars are properly repaired, not saying the others are bad, just not as good as they used to be back in the old days.
Oh and the comments of being scared, you are right to be so, anyone who turns up and does not fear the place will have an issue. The place needs respect and so does the traffic. Some of the faster guys can be very intimidating which is not nice when you are new. Aim to get on track first thing in the morning when it will be quiet, avoid busy times.
