OK, so at the risk of opening a massive can of worms I want to invite you to comment on the following, specific question:

I currently have Toyo Proxes T1-R fitted alround which I've been very happy with, however I need to replace the rears only (something to do with burnouts on the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans last year I suspect). Some of you may have noticed that Toyo's are currently a little hard to get hold of, so the fitter (a well known trackday supplier) has suggested Kumho Ecsta Sport KU39 "As a totally credible alternative, and in my view a better tyre".

I might add that the majority of my miles are 'spirited', year round, country drives or motorway jaunts, with possibly the odd trackday thrown in.

Does the PH Cerbera collective have any views?

Regards,
Olly

Hi, no idea on the Kumho's, however I've recently been through this process (yesterday and today).

They don't make the TR1's anymore, thats why you will struggle to get hold of them :/. You should try the Proxes T1 Sport, as these are the upgraded replacement. They have good reviews and a good price too smile

Many have mentioned the Toyo R1R's which I looked at and would have got, however for my car it would have meant moving from 35's to 40's on the front, and didn't fancy this, in terms of setting it up, ride height etc. If I get Nitrons or Protechs in the future, i'll probably look at the R1R's, as they are easier to adjust.

In terms of the Eagle F1's, I also found they don't make these either, they only make the F2's and you might have the same issue with 35's to 40's as I did :P

I personally wouldn't mix tire patterns, so would stick with the Toyo's smile T1 Sport smile

I've had those Kuhmo Ecsta's on my Sag in the past and originally I thought they were a cheaper tyre but they were actually very good. Did Cadwell Park on them and they gripped very well. I think they are a softer than standard compound so grip well at the expense of wear rate. Recommended.

As regards 35 profile versus 40 profile that extra 5% profile can actually help as 35 profile is very small on the front. Didn't like it on my T350 and 40 profile improved the handling no end, but I suppose you have to monitor ride height, wheel arch scrub...

is it just me - or do people find that the f1's don't last very long? I'm on my second set in less than a year with no track days or sprints etc..?

Depends on what your bias is, more towards road or track.

I am on my second set of Kumho V70's, medium compound rears and hard fronts seem to last me about 6,000 miles including 5 or 6 track days.

I moved to these from TOYO's and they are better, much better.

The feed back they give is brilliant, I can feel if I run over a fag butt, infact I can almost tell which brand such is the feed back through the steering and bum.

They do take a little time to warm up (1-2 laps) and like any track biased tyre they are not great in standing water but otherwise they are simply brilliant, when yo do excede the huge levels of grip they offer it is done with plenty of warning and is very controlable, no sudden snap sideways just a progressive controlable slide.

The down side of all this grip and feel is three fold really;

1) noise they are not quiet
2) harsh ride due to super stiff sidewalls
3) tramlining due to the side walls

but the feed back and grip they give is worth every downside.

I'm not a Toyo fan at all. They compare poorly in every objective test against the premiums and are defended by proponents on cost grounds. That's not really compatible with a 400bhp car though as a mindset in general, so it's Goodyear for me too for road use.

You do get what you pay for in some instances, on other occasions more expensive things are justified by proponents on...cost grounds tongue out. In reality, some of us can't afford £200 + for one tire, let a lone more. I would have stuck with the Goodyears but couldn't get any in my size, not F1's or F2's. Positive reviews are not hard to find for Toyos, however there are many inconsistencies across all tyre reviews. The problem I found was that you are reliant on others, subjective views. Take your very valid point though. Maybe we need reviews on Top Gear or Fifth Gear?

Not sure if they do your size, but my 16" fronts are Continental's, I much prefer them to the Toyos I had on.

I'm stuck for choices for the rears, so found Toyos to be the best of a crap bunch.

I run kumho ecsta v700 on my exige S; they are superior to Toyo T-1Rs and also Yoko Advan AO-48s.

Kumho are underated in this country for their tyre quality..
