Was merely wondering, when a school of fish is caught in a net and they are all hauled on board a trawler, how are they then killed?
I assume either frozen whilst still alive, suffocated or something more humane.
Either way i will still continue to eat fish.
Its something i would like to know.
Thank you.
Edit: Apologies if this is in the wrong section, couldnt figure out where i should ask.

From programmes I've seen the process seems to be they're put in a holding tank and then gutted by people in the ships hold?

Could be completely wrong tho.

I doubt they are gutted alive.

Many will suffocate. The rest probably just gutted alive.

dumped into a hopper from the net when its hauled aboard, then gutted and sorted into boxes which are then packed with ice and stacked in the freezer in the hold.

Yep there's no water holding tank etc for fish (there is for crabs and crustaceans which must be kept alive). The fish are dumped in a hopper after being caught and probably all suffocate to death. Those that don't suffocate will get gutted alive.

Depends on the size and type of trawler. The traditional trawlers you'll see (less and less) in traditional fishing towns will sort the fish down below and back them in ice, so they'll either suffocate on the deck, in the hopper or whilst in the ice, I believe once in the ice the essentially shutdown and can be brought back to life when they arrive at the factorys, where they'll be gutted and filleted.

Big fatory ships do the whole process at see and fillets go into deep freeze, some act as drop off for smaller sattelite trawlers, sometimes they stay out for many weeks or months.

Most trawlers will sort and gut at least some of the fish they catch during the downtime when the nets are being shot and during sailing to/from locations. They get a better price for the fish if they are landed cleaned (gutted) rather than Round (ungutted) Boats will land a mix of cleaned & round depending on size of catch. Also fish are packed in ice to keep them fresh... not to freeze them.
So in short fish gutted on the boats will be gutted alive if they have survived the truama of being caught and squished in the net
Factory Ships are a different kettle of err fish

After studdying a few with intense observation: the fish remain alive, then on the table they continue to jump and flap all over the place as they are being gutted alive, and continue to do so as the organs are sliced and removed - they continue until the heart is cut, at which point they stop rather suddenly.

Surely there has to be a more humane way of killing fish en mass?

Why would there need to be? They're fish.

It is quite humane due to the speed of which the fish are gutted.
