Canon 50mm f1.8

Inspired by Tim-b's thread ( http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... ) and taking the advice given I went in search of a cheap 50mm.

In the end I went new, prices on ebay seem to hover around £75 plus P+P but the price new can be as little as £81 with free P+P from Amazon! (it would also appear that ebay has at least one or two broken examples week in week out due to a potential lack of durability? This put me off spending something that may have already been dropped once and could be a hairline fracture away from falling apart?!)

Ordered from WEX late Monday night (£86.99 all in), arrived by 10am this morning and I've loved every second of the last few ours!

I also received my cheapie £11.99 TTL lead for some off camera flashings etc!

I loved mine, unfortunately it's broken in two so I've upgraded to the 1.4 50mm.................and a new camera. Absolutely loved playing when I first got it.

Canons 50/1.4 is even frailer than the 1.8!

I had my 1.8 for years and it was fine, great lens in some ways more reliable than the sigma I replace it with.

How so rob? My 1.8 fell to pieces when placing on a shelf, 1.8 feels far far better built.

Find an original EF50mm 1.8 (now known as the Mk 1) from the first group of EOS lenses announced. Far more solid than the mk2. I've had mine about 25 years and it's still going strong. Optically identical to the mk2.

Any knock on the front of the lens can kill the autofocus. Well known flaw in the design.

My 50mm 1.8 is broken too....autofocussing jams itself up. Manual focus still works though.

Keep going OP, the nifty-fifty is a great lens while it works!

Yep my 50mm juddering on the AF and has a scratch on the inside of the lens somehow. It's an awesome bit of kit for the money though. I would quite like a 35mm next. I love a good prime!

I used to like my 50mm f1.8, but since getting a 28mm f1.8, I've not touched the 50mm once. On a crop sensor, I just find the 28mm to be so much more useful as a focal length.
