A4 1.9 TDI 6 speed Auto Gearbox Problems?

I've just brought (privately) an 04 Audi A4 Estate 1.9 TDI 130, 6 Speed, with FSH and 128,000 miles.
It was sold/bought with no disclosed problems although I've noticed that when the gear leaver is selected in the chosen mode sometimes the display on the instrument panel fails to show the selection (I.E. P, R, N, D etc) it just flashed on all of them together although it still drives and moves up and down the box.
In addition when I select reverse it fails to engage fully a 'crawls' backwards, the R is not illuminated on the display panel either. However this is intermittent and it does select reverse occasionally!
I've got little to no experience or knowledge about cars so would appreciate peoples views on my problem(s).
