Hi,
I'm 19 and looking to buy my first car. I want to spend less than £2000 for the car itself. (2000 for insurance and 2000 for car)

I've been on confused.com and been looking at some insurance prices. For a 2005 Corsa Sxi 1.2 it will cost £1800 for 12 months insurance with admiral.

Preferably I'd like to have something that handles well with a good build quality.

I've had a look at a few, but what would you guys say?

Thanks,
User26

I've recently been doing insurance quotes for when I turn 18 and find that vehicles such as Mondeos, Galaxies, or even Volvos can be cheap with the right engine/year.

It really does depend on postcode it seems, I have friends who can only get reasonably quotes on cars such as Aygos.

Worth a look smile

Go for something different not corsa, saxo type cars as they are crashed alot by youngsters and will be higher premiums. You could get a mx5 the phers old favourite for £1500 and a car for less than a grand which is where my money would go and has as i have 2 at the age of 20.

Not really looking for that type of car either, but it's coming up as one of the cheapest. Insurance on the MK1 MX5 was £5000, Seems the only cheap quotes im getting are small hatchbacks.

Just look around at different cars and getting quotes try adding parents to the policy, limited mileage etc to bring the price down. When you find a car you like with a reasonable quote try different companies, phone them up can bring the quote down or specialist insurance companies for example.

I've got the policy as cheap as I can get it, but will obviously go through it again before i buy, I've been comparing cars with the same details so I defiantly know what the price is to insure each. Confused/Admiral looks like the only insurer that wants me, cheapest in every search I do (even cheaper than getting the box fitted).

What are the best hatchbacks around in the 1000-2000 range?

Most fiesta's seem to have pretty tidy handling. Would probably be my choice

Look at Astras, an early 00's 1.6 with low mileage and FSH will be well within budget. Very cheap to insure but check trim levels!! With all cars it can make more of a difference than engines.

Focus is a better car but IME more to insure, try them though!

What about a Focus? The handling is not bad and they are pretty reliable. Not sure about the insurance cost though.

Look beyond hatchbacks. Insurance is calculated, at least for young drivers, on "What's the chance of an 18 year old putting this car through a hedge backwards based on prior experience?"

For example, it's unlikely that many Mercedes W123 200Ds (55hp diesel engine) have been crashed by teenagers in the last few years, so you may be able to get a surprisingly cheap quote. And then spend your evenings doing illegal minicabbing. wink

Don't bother. Even once you pay for your insurance, they'll phone you up and try to void your policy (or make you pay another few K) a week later for any reason they can think of. Cue massive cancellation and admin fees, and you having to put "Had insurance declined or cancelled" on all future requests for insurance. Just wait until your risk is low enough that they don't stand to gain more from doing this kind of crap than by actually honoring the policy.

Actually for me I've found hatchbacks are the cheapest, I've tried some older classic cars aswell but they're all coming up about £3000 for the insurance
