Hi

The 350z I've paid a deposit on with a Trade garage is currently on a private plate which is not included in the sale. Due to collect it during next week at some point.

When first registered it was GJ54 FD*.

According to my HPI check, this was changed to a private plate in 2006, then 2008 it was removed and apparently went back to GJ54 FD* again.

It then went onto another private reg, which is currently on there now.

When this one gets removed, should it go back to GJ54 FD* again?

The other half seems to think it just gets allocated one thats avaliable, and that the original private plate owner must have put GJ54 FD* onto retention- which probably isn't the case now.

Just called up the dealer who has sold the car, and asked him for the new reg to sort out insurance.... he said GJ54 FD*.... but makes me wonder if he's just looked at his own HPI report and given me that registration.

When I put that 54 reg. into my car check, it says there's nothing on the records. But the current private plate still is.

What do you think? Don't want to call up insurance quoting that plate when it doesn't technically exist. Tax is also due at the end of March.

Will need to use the car asap for work so insuring it could be an issue- could I take the policy out in the current private reg, and then call them to change it when it gets transferred?

Also who should keep what documents if its not been completed?

I'll call them on Monday and tell them I'll collect the car on the following Saturday... surely it should be completed by then??

Confusing!!

Cheers

A car will usually default back to the original plate when a private plate gets taken off.

You should wait for the V5 logbook to be available with the correct reg before buying.

I recently took a plate off a car to trade it in - process took 15 days from me mailing documents to local DVLA office until I had the logbook back.

Chances are that it will go onto the original, non personal, plate. Whenever I've taken a private plate off, prior to sale, the car has always been allocated it's original plate.

DVLA will normally try and re-allocate the original registration.

If that is not available for some reason then they will allocate another registration number that will reflect the original registration date.

Original plate will be allocated unless it got allocated to another car whilst private plate on the Z, unlikely though. There was a time when dvlc were advising people to put their original plate on retention in case it got re-allocated rolleyes

Thanks for the replies.

What action should I take if I arrange to collect the car at the weekend (1st march weekend) and the transfer is still not complete?

Is it at all possible for me to sign for the car and take it away and drive it insured in the meantime?

Thanks

I would pop into police station explain & ask what would happen if I get stopped.
There has been a lot of problems lately about people getting stopped for no insurance, or not owning the car because of the police ANPR system on illegal cars, because their system is not updated. Problem is it's all well & good being right, you win in the end & getting refunds & charges dropped. BUT it's the agro at the time of: stopped they won't budge because 'the computer says no' & you're arrested & or car confiscated.

If the paperwork has already been submitted it only be a day or two before they get the letter of authorisation back saying what number has gone on the car.

If you can leave it until then you don't have to worry about insuring it on the private reg and then getting charged an admin fee to swap it over.

Removing a private plate is slow, seems to take a least 2 weeks from visiting the DVLA office until the new V5 is received through the post. It's an "offence" to sell the car during that period too as they may wish to inspect the vehicle ...
