Donington Park - £199 + £10 to hire a helmet + £5 travelling expenses (I live 5 miles from Donington)

RAF Marham - £60 + £70 to buy helmet + £100 travelling expenses (3 hours each way, but great roads). The track will be run in reverse in the afternoon, so two tracks for the price of one.

Insurance = £75 + £1000 XS for a £7500 car that I could repair myself if I wrapped it (and I have 3 others).

The costs will be similar (circa £250, £325 w/ insurance).

Q1. Should my first trackday be just down the road on a proper track, or around a flat airfield miles from home?

Q2. Any need for insurance, especially as there is no 3rd party cover?

Donington - on the door step, nice circuit, plenty of space for other traffic - enjoy

As for insurance - if you can afford to loose £7.5k then don't bother (I always have insurance)

I've done blyton park once and Donington once too. Like you I live close to Donington.

Both tracks were great. If it is ur first then try blyton, only just over an hour away from Nottingham. Donington was great too plenty of run off.

I took my mx5 to both and didn't have insurance as my car is only worth 2k.

Biggest recommendation is getting some tuition when you are there. It was the best £20 I've spent on me and the car!

re insurance. It's not £7.5k that I would be risking. The car is worth £3k as salvage (unless it is burnt out) and there is a £1k XS, so the risk is £3.5k for £75. Seems excessive to me, so I'll run the risk.

If Marham was closer, I'd go there first, but I think Donny it is.

I think tuition as well as bacon butties are an essential spend on the day.

I'm a huge fan of Marham - and do book both days, camp/B&B overnight, you won't regret it so long as the weather holds. If only one day is decent you will still have paid less than for one day at Donny. I did both days last August. Didn't stop grinning for about a month.

They are very relaxed, true enthusiasts. I spun my TVR 4 times, nobody said a word, there's absolutely nothing to hit, masses of space so no risk of hitting another car, and best of all they don't seem to bother with noise tests - but if you can make as much noise as a squadron of Tornados heading for Libya you will be doing well...

No formal tuition, but plenty of guys who will take you round and show you the lines and driving style. There was a rolling road on offer too last time. And for a beginner it is less daunting than a circuit. Risk a race track and it could be just your luck to hit the one piece of armco close to the track.

ive done both and if Marham was local to you i would say a great price and day, however if i lived 5 mins from Donington it would have to be a race track day for me especially with the craner curves over a flat airfield. If first one and looking at a budget evening ones start up at Donington in May

Well, money has been parted with - and due to it only being a walk home if it all goes tits up, I've chosen Donington.

If funds allow and I can get a booking at Marham, I may do that as well - why did nobody suggest that smile?

I'll let you know how I get on at Donnington on 29/03.

Good idea. If you like track daying, get yourself a comfortable helmet
