You're out on a bit of a hooning session, how often do you redline?

I know this is going to be engine specific, say n/a, iVTEC, Jap turbo, hot hatch etc, but so often if watching performance mag video reviews I see them taking the revs into the red, regularly

So, how often?

When I had my clio, I saw the redline a LOT. Not so much in the civic, maybe i've calmed down a bit...

Every few months in the GTE or SRI for no real reason. The 1.3 hasn't got a rev limiter (carb) but I know stops at an estimated 7.3k (rev counter stops at 7k).

my turbo drops power around 6000rpm and the redline is 6500 so I change as the power drops (torque is max at about 5600rpm and I try keep it in that area if driving quickly)

On every straight if it's clear and safe, I assume you mean taking it into the read rather than hitting the limiter. This is on an M3. Did the same in my Integra. Turbo cars I have had run out of puff towards therdecline so used to change a bit earlier.

I think this depends what redlining means, going up to but not passed it, or reving into the red
a lot of modern cars the rev limiter is at the redline, so the only way you can ever rev beyond it is through down shifting

In the 740i - Not often. It doesn't need to be wrung round to the red line and it doesn't over suit it. Still fun to do on occasion.

One night coming off a slip road on the M1 during 50 limit (with specs) I was tailgated off a slip road by another BMW (3series), full beam on. Obviously not going to go quicker as there was (IIRC) a camera on the slip road. The slip leads to a roundabout with trafic lights and then a dual carriageway. Agressive chappy pulled up alongside and accelerated hard to get away. I pulled away on part throttle before opening it up and leaving said 3series behind. Enjoyed the sense of fully automated acceleration so much that I kept it planted until the rubicon between merely losing the right to drive and the right to freedom had been crossed.

That was about 3 months ago and I've not redlined it since, thinking about it.

Occasionally hit the limiter in 2nd in the 182 during overtakes as it shifts pretty quickly through the revs from 35-60(ish!).

Redlining - entering the red zone, not bouncing off the limiter repeatedly.

I redline my EP3 on a regular basis, feels like it blows the cobwebs out when I get the chance to do it. Oil and fluids up to temp, clear, dry road, 2nd gear...bwarrrrrrrAAAAAAAAAAARPPPP!

Never used to bother in my old Cupra R, huge turbo shove from 3000-5500, running out of puff by 5800 and the redline at 6500, never bothered going there, no point.

I was a bit surprised how much more willing my morgan is to get up to the redline since I fitted a better flowing manifold and straight through pipe. I expected it would do, but the effect was still a surprise - just shows how crud the stock cvh item was.

I quite often find myself at the redline on motorway onramps

When the merc is warmed up, I'll run it to the red line when I have the opportunity. Using a car properly isn't a bad thing (but abusing it is), and the straight 6 sounds nice and has little power so you don't have to be going fast to do it.

It's bad for your engine to go into the red zone, so I get past that bit as quickly as possible.

Every time I drive it. In an MR2 when you accelerate this happens.

Nothing... nothing... 4500rpm right o lets get a bit of a move on... 5500rpm WARP SPEED MR SULU! all the way up to 7000rpm.

Rarely, there just never seems any point.
