Not the diesel one, but my 1600 petrol vectra version was two bolts and a cable to remove.

Gave it a thorough squirting with carburettor cleaner. Looked a bit better, but not sure if it made a whole lot of difference.

Worth a go though just in case. Be prepared to get fairly dirty though.

an old washing up bowl, small paint brush, plenty of spray carb cleaner and some rubber gloves!
Cant advise on removing it sorry but when you do it will probably be caked in crud, most of it can be carefully scraped away and the carb cleaner will do the rest

Egr on the 1.7 is a pita to remove you will find it on the back right corner/ side (as you loom at the engine) it has a couple of coolant pipes leading to it, check these carefully as they are very prone to leaking & don't like to be disturbed. A overnight soaking in carb cleaner will be the best option to clean it out

Carb cleaner or brake cleaner

Plus as an fyi - Saab, Alfa, Vauxhall all use the same diesel power plant
I replaced my EGR with one from Saab which was 50% cheaper and an OEM part
