I did it for 2 years or so while a student, we'd sit in the car (I did one where I was stood outside and thats because we hadn't got enough cars to cover every angle) for 12 hours and count. I say count, we'd also watch films, eat, listen to the radio, read, compile our various top 10's and occasionally sleep. I loved it and we prided ourselves on super accurate count results despite all of the above mentioned additional activities.
Never wore a high vis except when we'd assist after an accident (we saw LOTS of accidents), and got repeatedly b
ked for not wearing them.
On the serious side, if I wasn't with one of my close friends we'd be with one of the various older gentleman who were also on the books (it was a straight 50/50 split between students and old boys). It was great, we'd talk about the war and they'd bring sandwiches and cake that their wife made. They also loved to bring their deck chairs. I refused to sit in one for my entire time on the books.
I have had some varied and interesting jobs including my current career, but I look back with rose tinted specs at this job because we were so happy doing it. Plus if you're a car nerd it was good car spotting.
It was never a career, but it was never meant to be, it was perfect student work with very little responsibility, used to have a good old chat and the high light of our weeks would be if we were within walking distance of a chip shop.
