After a few weeks of hunting I finally found myself a shed money MK1 Eunos biggrin

98k on the clock, MOT till end of May, taxed till end of March.

Good points:
  • Paintwork in good condition
  • No rust round wheel arches
  • Sills in good condition (drivers side one will need a small amount of attention soon but nothing major)
  • All tyres have 5-6mm tred on
  • Hood in excellent condition
  • Drives lovely, forgot just how nice the gearbox feels on MX5s
  • HPI clear (found loads that were Cat D/C)
Bad points:
  • Exhaust needs replacing before next MOT (was advisory on last)
  • Drivers side seat bolster needs minor repair
  • No service history (appears to be be ex-owners club car at some point and looked after well though)
  • Minor scuffs on the bumper
  • Front missing from head unit
  • Needs a good hoover inside

Going to give her a good service (remembered I had 5L of 5w40 Fuchs Pro Silkolene still so just need filters, drain plug seal, transmission oil, brake fluid) then get the bits to do cam belt change.

No mods planned - want to keep her fairly standard for the moment. Will probably go for bigger brakes when they need doing but there appears to be plenty of pad left for now.

Looks nice. Really like the interior. Have you checked the hood drain holes? The sill will almost certainly be worse than you think as they do hide a lot of rot. Still, it's a relatively cheap fix.

Drain holes were clear, i'll do some more thorough checks once I get her home.

There is a small hole in the bottom of the sill on the passenger side a bit in from the rear wheel arch. Wheel arch itself seems to be un-affected.

Thankfully I've got a mate who restores cars (mostly VW beetles and camper) so I'm going to get him to do any work needed on it.

For shed money I was fully expecting some work to have to be done.

Been away the last few weekend so haven't had a chance to do anything yet.

However collected parcel today containing this little lot:

already got 5L of Fuchs Pro-Silkolene 5w-40

So that's my Saturday sorted smile

Mainly just fix what needs fixing and a bit of TLC for the moment. A previous owner fitted a stupid 4" bore exhaust to it which needs to go asap.

Oh and of course have fun driving her driving

Quick update - Saturday didn't go quite as I'd hoped. In the process of changing the belts it became apparent that the crankshaft pull bolt wasn't that tight yikes

Couldn't tighten it up to the required torque so now have crackshaft locking tool on the way.

So after quite a few weeks of nothing happening (crap weather or away at the weekends) I got the initial jobs finished off on the 5. Crackshaft pulley bolt now tight and replaced the CAS + Cam Case gasket (my suspicious were correct that an aftermarket one had been fitted - hopefully no more Oil leaks).

Was pretty pleased with the condition when removed the cover:

Quick clean today then finally got it out for a drive. Lovely little car: handles great, revs freely and is eager to please. Even the stupid exhaust is growing on me although still want something a quieter. It gets a bit much when you're playing high up the rev range.

Hopefully get back out tomorrow in it on some more demanding roads where I can get to know it a bit more. Feels more raw and eager than the MK2 which I'm liking. driving

So today was MOT day. Didn't bother checking anything before it went in as I was pretty sure it was going to fail.. The question was how badly..

Failed on:

  • Number plate light not working
  • New rear tyres
  • Front brake imbalance
  • Nearside Sill needs doing

Advisories for:

  • Rear brake pipe
  • Springs corroded

Assuming the front brakes don't need new calipers looking around £500 to sort it which is pretty much what I'd budgeted on smile

All in all, pretty happy with that.
