NASCAR were busy last night trying to get all the fan footage of the incident taken down from YouTube claiming it breached their copyright. Needless to say they failed and footage of the tyre landing on someone's head is now everywhere

That is awful, I hope those injured recover fully.

Would a second layer of fencing help? Is it time for that now? ~200mph and ~30 years with only one bit of fence does not seem enough!

No. The risks are fine given how infrequently it happens.

Jesus.

I don't want to sound like an a*se, but what is it with people who scream in these situations...? I'm looking firmly at the 'HOLY SH*T OH MY GOD' fella.

If someone's injured, they'll be more than aware that they're hurt. They don't need to be reminded by some screaming idiot. Teams of screaming idiots enthusiastically pointing out that something awful just happened is going raise everybody's stress levels and exacerbate things for the injured...

So again, what's with the screaming idiots?

Rant over.

Yeah - the fking pussies. I'm sure, faced with a similar situation, you'd calmly light up a Marlboro, blow some smoke rings and then perform open heart surgery on the injured using the plastic fork that came with your Nachos

hehe

Absolutely crazy crash though, thank goodness no-one was killed! An engine getting loose like that is a recipe for death.

More likely because they're human, I've never seen footage of a crowd of ordinary people reacting calmly and quietly faced with a "disaster", there's normally a lot of screaming and panic.

No, as the guy above says - it's because they are human. If you thought you'd just seen someone die, or seen someone so injured you thought they'd die then you'd proabably react in a similar way. It's easy to sit at your keyboard and decry them for "over-reacting" but we now know that no lives were lost, and we also know this is history and we're in no position to help, so we don't get the same emotional response. A purely objective response might be different, but in the heat of the moment adrenaline takes over and people don't act rationally. Nothing to do with them being "arses" it's just what happens in extremely high stress situations.

Now, getting back to the crash itself, it looked like there was an access gate or something in the fence, and by pure bad luck the airborne car hit exactly that weaker section of the fence, and part of it went through. You can see in the facebook clip above that this area ended up opened up. So maybe the reaction to this might not be "a 2nd fence" but maybe some kind of redesign of the weak points of the existing fence, so maybe double layered with a 2nd fence back from the gates or something, so there's an overlap of "permanent fixed" fencing in these areas?

I've seen the fan video from the stands, I can't see anyone getting hit by the tyre, though I understand it did happen.

Without being maudlin, and in different times perhaps, youtube Farnborough Airshow Tragedy for an unearthly response to a terrible accident. I saw this a few months ago and was struck by how different things were a few years after WW2. The show went on, too.

Hope all recover in the US.
