Battery not charging,alternator making whining+ticking noise

After months of problems with my Rover 75 turbo deisel i thought i had finally got to the bottom of my charging problems.Discovered my 'ALT' fuse(exciter fuse)for my alternator had blown,it ran great then for thefirst time in months and was firing up in the coldest of weather no problem.Then the same old problem again,car just running on the battery power and not starting after 4 or 5 days!!
Anyway,last time i charged the battery as soon as i connecting the terminals i was aware of a really faint eletrical whining noise,don't know if it had always done this or my ears had just tuned into it,anyway,using a screwdriver as a stethoscope it's coming from the alternator???This is particularly annoying as this is the third new alternator in a year!!!It's a small whining noise but when using the screwdriver to hear it there is also a regular fast ticking noise at the same time as the whine,anyone an ideas?Thanks
