Say when I'm travelling at 30 mph in town in 3rd gear and need to slow down to turn into a junction. I slow down to a safe speed and change down to 2nd. When I lift clutch though the revs on tatch jump up a few hundred revs (from 1000 revs to like 1300). Is this hurting my clutch or should I be rev matching?

Yes it is and yes you should.

1000 rpm to 1300 rpm would make rev matching fairly pointless.
You would also have to have god like sensitivity to get the revs perfect at that sort of low rpm.
What car is it? 1300 rpm seems very low to be driving around town.

You shouldn't drag the clutch up when braking - brake, clutch, brake not brake and clutch at the same time.

It won't do a huge amount of damage, it's just sloppy driving.

Yes I seperate braking and changing gear. Say Im going 30, I brake to 15mph then off brake and change to 2nd gear. Should I just brake more so it doesn't jump up as much?

Rev the engine up a few hundred RPM before releasing the clutch, try to judge it so that the revs don't jump at all when the clutch is released. If you pause in neutral during the gearchange you can sometimes feel through the lever when the revs are just right for you to complete the gearchange and get straight off the clutch without a jerk.

Yes it'll wear it, but if that's the worst treatment that your clutch ever gets, it'll out-last the rest of your car.

If you think about, usually when you engage the clutch it has to do enough "work" to get the whole weight of your car moving including any passengers and luggage.

When you release the clutch in the situation you described all it has to do is adjust the speed the cranksaft and pistons are moving. This is a tiny amount of "work" in comparison.

This may be a silly question but what is it actually made of that it can take all that weight at speed without wearing out so quickly?

Crushed unicorn horn. biggrin

It used to be asbestos, but now it's fibreglass with a fancy organic resin added.

Brake linings and clutch disc linings are very similar as in both cases the idea is to maximise friction while minimising wear. They used to be made of asbestos but nowadays fiberglass and other materials are preferred for health reasons. But asbestos gave better cushioning and wear! The linings also contain metal strands (copper and/or bronze) to dissipate heat and give longer life.

Depends what car you're in. I do it all the time from similar revs in the golf, although I can imagine it would be hard in some of the Pork that I've driven, which are far more sensitive to throttle input.

Rev matching 300 revs is a piece of piss in the carb'd volvo with long, well weighted pedal travel but i can understand it being difficult in a modern, short travel, light, drive-by-wire laggy throttled car.

ETA its also against police driving standards wink

First I have ever heard of that. Not being argumentative but that does not make sense to me (but I am probably wrong)

So I am braking for a junction or turn and I am supposed to break to reduce speed then come off the brakes before I disengage the clutch and change gear, then brake again confused

Depending on how im driving I would either h/t brake and rev match, or if just driving in town, slow down in what ever gear I am in then shift to the correct gear for the obstical.

Am I wrong ?

No, but you're about to get embroiled in a classic, oft-repeated PH argument wink
