Just got a 51 s2 and love it. It has now developed an annoying knocking noise (sounds similiar to a knocking exhaust if the hangers have gone). It seems to be coming from the rear left. It is not the exhaust and happends under load aswell as without load. Shocks seem ok, not the boot lid. Help, it is driving me mad has anyone else cured such a problem?????

could well be the inboard toelink. very common part to go due to exhaust heat and poor quality. DOes it do it more when the car is hot?

grab the toe arm and rotate the joint - if it crekas / feels sticky it's probably the culprit.

cheers

I had grease injected into the ends, there not cheap to replace. This was actually recommended by the dealer ! It worked in after a couple of runs, been fine since, although not sure how long it will last. You can also push the backend up and down, or get someone to do it while you grip the toe link, you can feel it clunking, like a snooker ball in a empty paint tin.

Yup. Sounds like toe-link. Happened with my old car - bloody annoying. 340Ragtop fixed it with a grease injection

glad to hear my grease injection worked Jon!! did you ever sell that 111s?? hope so.

As Jon says- it can be remedied, but does unfortunately often need replacing. About £100 fitted - not really DIY as you will need to set up the geo on that wheel afterwards (toe).

Thanks chaps very useful. John mentioned a grease injection, is this into a grease nipple or just around the ball joint to stop any metal on metal contact? And finally, if I have it replaced do I have to get both sides replaced or only the one? Thanks again

you can just change the one.

The grease injection is much harder than it sounds. It involves removing the plastic boot (which is in place with a large spring clip) and putting a load of moly grease in the joint.

Alternatievely you can do it with a big needle - but then you've punctured the boot and the joint will technically be buggered - though it will probably stop the squeak.

Replacing it has got a lot cheaper recently - the part used to be about £60 nut I understand it's now about £17

cheers
