Am I right in thinking the original Porsche 964 Tiptronic boxes were Mitsubishi designed or even built?

The Galant v6\Legnum had a flappy paddle change (think it was Porsche based?).

Would you risk it though? Back in 2003 a colleague had one. He went to PX it after racking up a few miles and the dealer told him to sell it privately as it'd be too much hassle for him to take it, then come back to him with cash. He kept it in the end and I think eventually scrapped it

You can get DSG equipped Audis, VWs, Skodas from around £4k now and these have a "proper" full auto with flappy paddle manual shift set up.

Given it's actually a clutched manual box, not an automatic, it's easily the worst I've ever had to use. Stupid, and slow.
The Alfa Selespeed is also a robotised, clutched manual box (as is the Smart ForTwo etc.)

I bloody well don't.
Ok maybe not a cheap one, but a £150k+ supercar would be nice.

Never used one.

Is it equally crap?
I had an early one and whilst it isn't brilliant when parking, and occasionally would behave oddly, it was otherwise great. Added to this is the fact the sillyspeed comes with all the bells and whistles... Boise sound system, heated seats, cruise etc and only cost a grand. They're galvanised so rust is minimal and have double wishbone front suspension so handle great for fwd. And they are beautifully made too. So I say yes! But lots of horror stories about them, although I had no bother with mine at all. Later models were better too.

I'd rather have a proper manual supercar.

The Selespeed isn't too bad, though the shift speed change depending on how hard you are driving. If you are just pottering around it about 1 second, if pressing on it speeds up to ~700ms.

It's certainly no DSG box in terms of shift speed, but compared to a Smart it's pretty good (the Smart appears to use the Royal Mail for communication between the paddles and the box).
