Hi, just a quick one.

My front foglights have condensation in the lens. The car is booked in for its MOT today. Will that be a failure?

They are a bit fiddly to get at, so I was thinking of driving around with them switched on (at the risk of looking a complete cock), to try and dry them out a bit.

Any opinions?

Cheers in advance.

Don't think condensation in light units is a fail.

Ok, cheers. I'm taking it out for a good run anyway before I take it for the MOT to help with the emissions, so I still might try it just in case.

Front fogs aren't an MOT requirement, you'll be fine.

Ok, that makes sense, because I never use them anyway. Thanks smile.

True, but if fitted they have to be working. I'd put them on to clear the condensation.

I believe that's the case of the reversing lamps, but not a front fog lamp. I'm pretty sure the front fogs are exempt from the test.

They don't need to be working, they're not part of the test.

^This. I always watch my MOTs being done, and they never even switch on the front fogs.

ETA and in a bizarre bug, when I quote your post PistonHeads elects to remote the "T" of "They". I've edited it back in again...

100% that front fogs are not part of the test, because in a previous car mine never worked and it sailes through 3 tests without a problem.

As has already been said, front fogs are not tested. Condensation can be a failure in lights that are tested though.

The front fogs on my mum's car were completely broken, with cracked lenses and no working bulbs and it passed, so should be fine.

OK, you live and learn. I thought it was like the spare tyre, you didn't need 1 but if you had one and it was bald you'd fail. But front fogs obviously aren't.

I take it all back.

The spare tyre is not a testable item either. You can have a completely bald spare in your boot and it will not cause you to fail the test. The only tyres that are tested are the ones in contact with the road.

Ummm - it IS like the spare tyre. In that they don't even look at it, and it's not part of the test...

How stressed do you all get at MOT time? I'm a tester and when mine's due I find it quite stressful as I get one of our other testers to do mine so I assume it must be even worse for the rest of you.

It can be a bit stressfull. I took it for a spin earlier and thought 'what on earth could it fail on?' As it drives spot on.

You prepare for the worst though. I'm sitting in the reception area now and can hear them revving the engine for the emissions I suppose
