I want to chop in my mk5 GT170 Golf for a newer model. I'm not sure about getting another diesel, it is so bloody expensive, and I have always had petrols! My partner wants me to get another GT170 though.

I love the new Polo GTI 180. I think they look amazing, great for around town, but also look like they give good MPG (I do minor motorway journey for work). But then I think if I'm gona get a GTI why not get a Golf mk6 GTI?

I want to take all 3 models for a test drive, as obviously that will probably be the decider, but have any of you experienced any of the above models, good or bad?

Thanks
Lx

Do you prefer manual or DSG? The Polo is DSG only. They are quick, but a bit character-less (and read up on the engine oil consumption issues!)

I'd lean towards the Golf GTI...

Thanks Hub. Admitted I have only ever test driven a 140 diesel Golf with DSG. Correct me if I'm wrong, but do DSG sometimes have paddle shifts behind the steering wheel? I'm sure I have seen some with them???

I am happy with manual or DSG to be fair, but think I'd have more fun with a manual, its what I have always driven normally.

I will look up the oil consumption issue in the Polos... Thanks for the heads up!

Yes, they often have paddles. Presumably it's an option on the lower-spec cars, but the 3 cars you're thinking about should all have them in DSG form.

Mk6 Golf GTI
Good choice, still one of the top 3 all round hatchbacks. 35mpg possible.

Mk6 GT170 (you mean GTD?)
Good if you do high miles, it will feel nose heavy after the GTI, but given a 1000 miles you wont notice.

Polo GTI 180
NO, too many question marks over oil consumption, yes it will be in warranty, but it will be a major pain
if you get a bad one.

Must it be a vw? Dare I say it but better value options may be available? More exciting also...

I picked up a 10 month old Golf ed35 gti a few weeks back and am enjoying it. At 235bhp it's usefully quicker than your other options and is easily mappable. And there are some cracking deals around...

Yeah the GTD. I'm not too fussed about MPG as although I do motorway journeys, they are not major motorways, and I find at the weekend, the car guzzles the diesel from driving around town!

It's true there have been some oil consumption issues with the twincharged 1.4 TSI but there's plenty of people (me included) with no problems at all. It's not like the mk6 GTI hasn't had similar oil consumption issues reported by some owners too.

If you want DSG and don't need a big car, then I'd pick the Polo any day. If insurance is an issue, I found that the Golf GTI was over twice the premium of the Polo GTI (and it's Seat & Skoda siblings).

Insurance is no issue, I use to own Subarus, so have always had high premiums... It would be nice to have lower insurance though of course!

I am liking the Polo (much to my partners annoyance). What IS the issue with the oil consumption then? Costs of said problem?

Piston rings.

Mine had a replacement engine at 5,000 miles but continued to drink oil. Then a new clutch at 20,000 miles, then the EGRV......

I got shot in the end. Loved the acceleration. Handling not on a par with rivals.

In the end though it was the reliability which did it for me.

I’d go for the Golf Gti in your situation.
I have a Leon FR with the 170ps Tdi unit & DSG – same as GTD but it was £4/5k cheaper than equivalents at dealer prices plus had sat nav and only 7k on clock at year old. It’s good on fuel if you’re doing long motorway trips (my long term ave is 44mpg) but around town it will do about 30mpg or less if it doesn’t warm up (and that can take 10 miles on a cold day).

DSG and the Tdi unit are well mated imo, power deliver is smooth and it’s not gutless at the top end under kick down. DSG box can sound mechanical at times (slow speed manoeuvres) but other than that it’s smooth.

I’ve had no problems with engine or gearbox and touch wood no DPF issues to date either and I do a few short trips mixed up with longer journeys as well.

I can't comment on the Polo as I've never driven one, but I'd get the Golf GTI over the GTD any day.

Sounds as if you like some mild performnce and the MKVI GTI won't dissapoint. I had one for two years and am now in a diesel and hate every waking second of it (not a GTD, 320D I'm afraid).

Round town mileage in the GTI was 29-32. Depending on how I drove it could dip to 27 or on longer journey's possibly get to 38. Poor (ish) consumption is worth it though, becuase it's such a superb all round car to drive.

It does drink oil mind, if I remember correctly, about a litre every 1500-2000 miles (possibly less). I'm no expert but I think that's pretty excessive.

I've never driven the GTD or Polo, but based on my recent hideous and ongoing diesel experience, I don't know why you'd choose the GTD over the GTI. Get the GTI, you won't regret it smile

If you are buying a new polo I wouldnt be as concerned the revised engine seems to be behaving itself.

Not having driven any of them but going from a Octavia VRS 170 diesel to a Fabia VRS 1.4 the difference in fuel consumption is more of an issue than I thought it would its at least 10mpg worse on fuel than the diesel across the board , plus it needs super unleaded which is more than diesel , plus it hasnt got the range so it reminds you how bad it is on fuel more often smile

I've had a Polo GTI from brand new, 18 months ago. It has covered 23k now.

Feel free to ask away with any questions you might have.

I'd certainly take a look at the Leon and Octavia as alternatives to the Golf (plus maybe the Fabia but I'm too keen on the looks myself). Both available as 170bhp diesel or 200bhp petrol. If you're swung by looks then the Scirroco is very pretty if it's got enough space in the back for you.

Mine- in 9000 miles not a drop of oil used. And it's a 2010 car. Some have experienced issues- thankfully I haven't. Great car- looks good for a hot hatch, quick, great economy and cheap to buy, surprinsgly so for a VW!
