Since when did servicing become so ridiculously expensive?

Just asked Renault for a quote for the Laguna

£607.73

What the fk does that actually buy me?

At this rate it'll be going down the Halfords Auto Center for a £190 special..All it really needs is an oil change and a stamp in the book!

Obviously it depends entirely on which service level it is.
I'm sure they'd happily direct you to the service schedule page in your owner's manual which will tell you at what mileage the services should be done and which items are included.

Oil change and a quick wipe over with an oily rag

Then do it yourself and keep the receipts to prove it was done. Cost £50.

Exactly. Even if you are doing it for the first time, if it takes longer than 1 hour I'd be surprised / you've done it wrong.

Phone around and ask the Renault dealer to price match Halfords.

Depending on teh age of the car, do it yourself.

NO WAY that is just a minor, must be a cam belt in there somewhere at that price, unless they are quoting for "suggested items" as well?

Toyota once tried that with me, "suggesting" that i should have new tyre's as they had done 20k regardless of the fact that they were not even close to the wear limiters.

For years the vast majority of servicing has been to change the oil and filter and a long list of pointless things to check most of which you can do easily yourself.

Even if you are dropping all the fluids and changing plugs and all filters thats still really expensive.

It's got a chain

Still under warranty, so i either pay through the nose or find an independent.

Just needed to vent my shock at what i'd been quoted!

You can get an oil and filter change change with a stamp in the book at Kwikfit for £40-£60.

I couldn't even obtain the oil for what they did it for so it was actually cheaper than doing it myself.

They did a battery test and coolant test as well.

Utter bargain.

I just had a full service (only excluding belts) on my R26 for £229 at SJ Cook and Sons in Bristol (Renault main dealer). Great service and included a full valet which would have cost me £25 down the local hand-wash place.

As an alternative ask the dealer what their hourly rate is. And ask exactly what the service includes. Then simply book it in for an oil/filter change and pay the hourly rate.

I find DIY less hassle than going to a garage, especially if its not done while you wait.

Plus I know its actually been done- the council did a 'secret shopper' test around my way and found that only one garage was satisfactory!

Sorry but there is no possible way that is a minor service. Most Main dealers will be charging c£100ph labour (+ VAT), so a minor service, oil and filters you are looking at what £50 + VAT parts (I am assuming your Lag is a Derv and so no sparkers just air/oil/fuel filters and some oil), so lets pessimistically assume £120 ph NET for labour, that's about 4.5 man hours charged, minor service should be an hour labour at the most...what the hell are they doing for the other 3.5+ hours?

My sister has just had a Full service and belts done on her 172 CUP and that was c.£500 at a Renault specialist in Northampton.......and that took all day......
