SatNav for Europe and US of A

The TomTom we have is on the last of its very long legs so looking to replace it and I have a trip to Europe planned for next month then in the States shortly after. Both trips will involve driving. I have an iphon but am midful of being nailed by data charges.
So, its a easy question - what are my best options? Ideas / thoughts / experiences welcolmed...

I would get a decent memory card for the iphone and use Co-pilot Live... they have maps for EU and US...offline use unless you want live traffic, which can be turned off...
Personally I have an EU Co-Pilot on my Galaxy s3 that's ALL of Europe...routing is brilliant in fact I prefer it to TT and I have a choice of 3 routes most times... To date..it has never let me down and all destinations have been spot on...

I have a Garmin Zumo that I can use on the bike or in the car, and have mapping for both Europe and North America.

I have used it for a number of trips to the states and throughout Europe, and it has performed faultlessly to date.

You can buy a Garmin for a relatively low price and either buy the mapping at the same time, or buy it on eBay etc wherever is the cheapest. Plus the mapping can be bought pre-loaded onto a memory card that you simply enter into the unit, or as a download whichever you prefer.

Has speed camera data and poi's, hotels filling stations restaurants etc,

I left my tom tom at home last christmas so i downloaded CoPilot.

Its fantastic, amazing database of places shops etc, i switched off the live bit to avoid data bills. it was only about $7 too.
Its much better than tom tom on the iphone & i didn't miss the stand alone at all.

one thing to bear in mind if you buy a tom tom and US map. The maps are tied to the unit so next time you buy one you will need to fork out for another US map. That really pissed me off.

Thanks for the thoughts... I'm so used to the TomTom its interesting to hear no one recommends them!
Shall look into the iphone options and let you know how i get on!!

I've had a similar requirement for the last 10 years or so, this is what I did.

Bought a Garmin Nuvi 200w in Walmart in the US (it came with the full North America maps preloaded.
Then "bought" the full European maps, installed them to an SD card, plug the SD card in the side of the Nuvi and away you go.

Over the course of the last few years, I've added various other countries and continents on SDCards, so I'm now not far off having the whole world mapped in one device.

This option has performed faultlessly for me and I would not be without it.
