brake reaction bushes for E39 M5 worn
Discussion
Hi everyone. I had 3 advisories on my E39 M5 when I got it back from inspection 2 service.
1. Front brake reaction arm bushes worn
2. Cam cover baskets leaking
3. NSF ARB link gaiter ripped
What is a brake reaction arm bush is there another name for them. I tried powerflex but they didn't know what they were that's why I'm wondering if there is another name for them. I have no brake judder at any speed. No wobbly steering what i do have is tramlining and at times always correcting to keep the beast straight. Iv been quoted £575 fitted for the bushes seems a tad expensive. Any idea guys.
thanks Sembi

They're more commonly known as he front 'thrust arms' bushes,
item #5 in this diagram,

£575 sounds like a lot of money to change them, unless of course they are quoting to change the whole arm not just the bush and are using genuine BMW parts.

Flip in hell man now I know what they are and what they look like. Thank you very much. The price was to change using BMW dealer parts. I was wondering if powerflex do these parts. Ill ring them in the morning. I remember the garage saying the parts from BMW were £200+ crazy hey.
Thanks for the diagram something I can show to retailers of bushes.
kind regards Sembi

Nearly 3 years now since I bought it... and still a joy each time I drive it

I have only had mine 16 months. I had a Evo 1 lancia Delta Intergrale before I brought the M5, I had more "looks" with the Lancia but for raw ruthless power the E39 M5 has put a smile on my face for 16 months. The Lancia had the looks but no power compared to the M5. I get the same attention and questions most petrol stations etc etc as the Lancia. I'm not a rich guy but I will somehow maintain and get this M5 top notch. Your car looks nice in that colour some nice shots your garage site.

Don't use M5 bushes, use the X5 ones, they are more heavy duty and a direct replacement. Google it and you will see it's a common upgrade.
I don't know where you pulled that price from but it's nowhere near that, I think I got them both for well under £100, maybe you have priced the complete arm?
You cannot fit these yourself BTW(unless you have all the tools), we had to get an air chisel to get the old ones out and I think press the new ones in (it was a while ago), not a DIY spanner only job so don't attempt it only to find out you cant get the old ones out. Any decent garage can do this quickly and easily.

Hi Rog B these were the prices quoted by the garage. I'm off there now to check if the price is for the arm too. Explain to me like I'm a 6 year old are you refering to a BMW X5. If so what model, is the year of the model important etc etc. You can probably tell I'm useless with mechanical side of cars probably because I'm a carpenter lol. Thank you for your response Rog B

Ok I checked my old emails and I did this in 2010,so you have two options here.
I purchased the bushes from Cotswold BMW for £65.58 inc vat and uk delivery for the pair-to order please ring 01452 872666
When speaking to ANYONE ordering these do not tell them it is for an M5, they will just tell you they are incorrect for that car, this is BS.
Ask for this bush by part number which is 31 12 6 769 715 -they are for a BMW X5 but I cannot remember which model
Your second option, and this is now where I buy all my BMW parts is bmwminiparts.com submit an enquiry on this site and their team will email you back with the cheapeast supplier for this part from their network, it is THE best resource for genuine BMW parts, plus you can also learn a lot from the handy diagrams too! :-)

Also, item 6 in the list is your anti roll bar link, they are cheap to replace.
