After 16 hours (I kid you not) of replacing wires/diodes/earths etc etc we have got the drivers side pod to work - off the battery only (not via the dash switch. Does this point to the relay? If so where is the relay please? (Only one in passenger footwell....). Wedge bible is in the post....

TIA

Paul.

Thanks Roy.

Thanks for the link. It was one we have been working from its correct for the top 4 diagrams but the relay diagram is different from what I have in the car.

Any other pointers anyone please?

Thanks, Paul.

the relays on my 280i are in line. they are in the engine bay passenger side of the radiator. it was like that when i bought it, the diodes were there too. damned stupid place to put them.
probably looked there tho but yours might be in line too, just need to follow the wire.

The light/pod relays are on the relay board (Depending on your cars layout) in the passangers foot weel with the ECU. In theroy you have three, one for each pod and a master relay,
I found the best help for finding which is which is the drivers hand book, this gives you a better layout of the relays etc that the idiots guide, certainly for the S1 for the S2 the appear to be nearly standard. If you car hasn't been messed about the three relays are in a row and the are the 2nd row from the right on the relay board.
They are relays num Top to Bottom.
Headlight motor control. 78
LH Headlight motor. 76
RH Headlight motor. 77
Normaly the relay to the right of The Headlight motor control is the
Headlight control. 74 (which is the light master control I Think)
The next one down to that is the
Headlight Main beam/dip beam. 75
On the outside of those you should find the dieode which is n important part of the whole operation.

I hope that helps.

Andy,

On mine the diode is on the side of the fusebox (in the glove compartment) I pulled it out, tested for continuity and it is shot.

Two questions. What size diode do I need to replace it? And which way does the current flow (which way round do I insert it)? More silly electrical questions!

Hi Wilfe

If the dieode has gone you will have a lot of fun with the lights, so replace it ASAP.
Sorry its a long time since I did one of mine so I can't remember the size you need, but the price is pence!

Thanks, Andy. In fact the headlights are the least of my worries until I hear the engine rumble again. I have some diodes, much bigger in size than TVR's, rated at 6 amps, surge 300 amps. Then I have to work out which way is up.

I know it's an obvious response but the new diode needs to go in the same way round as the old one.

Yes, Danny, but my old one has no marking on it to show size or direction. Which of course leads to the old question: Does size matter?

Is the case identical at both ends? Sometimes the polarity is indicated by a chamfered end. I'd imagine any diode rated 12v or more rated to a few amps would be fine

If you have a multimeter with diode test function you can use that to determine polarity, but I reckon a 300A diode is wasted in this application anyway biggrin

Danny, there is no indication of any sort on the one I pulled out. The new one I have is clearly marked.

Ian, my multimeter doesn't have a diode test function. If I get a tiny resistance in one direction and infinite in the other, I figure it works. The new one is 6 amp but the fine print says it can take a 3oo amp surge. At least it's new and free.
