Fed up of filling someone else's pockets when you fill up?. Well you need to head for Belarus & the Ukraine.
They pay just 70p & 90p per litre for unleaded!.
Not sure what they're roads are like or how tourist friendly they are, but at less than £1 per litre, got to be worth checking out.

Bosnia & Bulgaria will hardly break the bank either at around £1. Link to the website: http://www.fuel-prices-europe.info/index.php?sort=...

Not sure about this. The cost of driving Scotland to Ukraine and back to fill up might offset the saving.

Only problem is that you have to live in the Ukraine or Belarus.

I'll stick to good old Blighty and its expensive fuel thanks.

We're not expensive, we're cheaper than most of our closest mainstream European neighbours.

I was surprised how cheap British petrol is, compared to our neighbours. We're cheaper than...

France
Belgium
Holland
Denmark
Sweden
Italy

but the following are cheaper than us...

Luxembourg
Switzerland
Austria
Spain
Andorra

Germany is a very similar price to us.

Useful info for a tour of Europe wink. Leave these shores with the tank brimmed to the gunwhales, and come back on fumes smile.

Belarussian and Ukrainian fuel is appalling quality, I think its about 85 RON or something but you can spot the cars driving in Poland that are running on whatever it is as they smoke like hell. Also given the average monthly salary in these places is less than $300 a month its pretty expensive in comparison. Oh and the roads are appalling and often unsealed.

Half our cars are diesel though, and that's more expensive so people still fill up abroad.

It's even more interesting when you compare gas & electricity prices, we are really cheap. Then move onto general shopping, white goods and cars, we are the cheapest. Yet the media would have us believe we're rip off Britain, a phrase that is at least 20 years out of date.

It's a bit of a myth that motoring here is vastly more expensive than the rest of the world anymore. It's facking expensive just about everywhere these days. And I still rather live in Blighty than some of the stholes on that list even if it was twice the price.

Well there you are then!

Leave Blighty, nip into France, and through Belgium - fill up and lose a bit of money. Then drop into Germany - fill up and break even. Head into Austria - fill up and lose a bit, and then enter Bosnia (or Bulgaria, whichever one it is that's there), and fill up at a MASSIVE saving. Then do the return journey, and I'll bet that you'll have more money left over than if you'd just spend umpteen months driving to Leeds and back.

VED in particular is very good value in the UK.
I beg to differ.

Compare it to the rates in a lot of nearby countries (as close as Ireland) and you may change your mind!

Ooooo, get you!

So explain how it is good value? What do you perceive you get for your £20-475? How much of that tax actually goes back into maintaining and improving the road network?

I thought that less than a third of the VED collected was spent on our road network. I do not feel that comes under the heading 'very good value'.

Feel free to educate me.

  • VED isn't ringfenced for the road network.
  • People in Eire would happily swap their equivalent of VED (called VRT) for ours, because theirs is much higher. Drive something with more than 225gCO2/km, sir? That will be €2350 per year.

Since when was VED 'supposed' to be used on the roads?
