Hi,

The missus took on some extra responsibility at work over the Christmas period, for which she was promised a one-off additional payment by her manager, as sanctioned in turn by his manager (the Regional Manager).

This payment was meant to show up in her January pay, but never materialised. Having had a discussion with her manager, who again escalated the issue to his boss, she was told to write an email to the Regional Manager requesting the money be paid in her February pay packet. Well, she's just had that, and it didn't show again.

She has spoken to her manager and he has, yet again, escalated the issue. He has been told by his superior that they need to write yet another email, and "hope" that the payment is made in the March paypacket. In the meantime, my OH has been rostered in for another period of additional responsibility.

What are her options here, as this seems ridiculous? We are talking about a multi-national company with £billions in revenue and many thousands of employees; I suspect herein lies part of the problem.

Nobody seems to be taking responsibility for this extra payment, and nobody is trying to help her. The sum of money we are talking about is relatively substantial (hundreds of pounds) so she is not prepared to 'forget' about it. Likewise, she hates the idea of taking on more responsibility in the workplace when they do not have the decency to pay her what they owe her. Of course she does not want to burn metaphorical bridges and make her work-life even more difficult, but I think enough is enough!

What route would you go down in similar circumstances?

Regards,

EYW

In this situation i'd say she needs to go above the head of all the people who she's already spoken to, maybe even the HR or finance director. They are unlikely to care, but with a bit of luck they'll prompt the person who's actually responsible and it might get sorted.

I hate the expression "escalate", it's normally another word for "passing the buck".

Hope your OH gets sorted - not a nice thing to have happen.

Let me guess.

Said 'Manager' has promised over and above their authorisation.

What is she doing even working for a company like that?

Oh, let me guess again.

The economy being what it is, and people being desperate for jobs, employers of all shapes and sizes can take the p1ss and get away with it.
