Help and advice on evo5
Discussion
Hi
My mate is going to have a look at a 1999 EVO 5 at the weekend. The car is an import and has very low miles with minor modifications. Everything seems in order on hpi and the seller sounds like he knows his stuff and has looked after the car.
Is there anything to look out for problems wise with these cars. Any areas that suffer from rot etc. he knows to check the usual things but didn't no if there was anything to be cautios of before handing over his hard earns cash.
Any help and advice will be appreciated.
Thanks
Marky

Hi, rot is an issue if it's been in this country for a few years and hasn't been undersealed, rear chassis and fuel filler neck are very prone on this type of car under these circumstances.
Evos are generally very reliable, but at that age it'll need someone to have a good look, preferably by someone who knows how they should feel to drive. Warped front discs are another issue, knocking front top mounts, lash adjuster ( tappet ) noise are all things to look for.
MLR is your friend for this sort of question.

Nearly asked if it was a 6 when I saw it was a '99 car........yes, exactly the same stuff to look out for, the imports weren't undersealed, and as a consequence tend to fall apart underneath if not done privately when first brought in. They can look stunning and still be wrecked underneath.
If it makes noises like a donkey in pain when cornering, the AYC pump will be on it's way.

To add to the above, check it's been serviced every 6 months/4,500 miles and it's had the cam belt changed within the past 45,000 miles.
Also, check the clutch carefully, it's designed to be the weak point in this car and will slip if it's standard and has been abused.
Very high pitched rattling/tinkling from the front of the engine bay could be a wastegate flap issue, but is relatively easily fixed.
