i just taxed my aries, it is on a 61 plate, so no mot papers as well.

i took my v5 (well small part as havent got them through yet) and my insurance, and the post office taxed it with no problems.

When the tax reminder comes through tax it online. If the system accepts it then you are good to go and no awkward moments at the post office counter.

When I built my car it had to pass the SVA and I was also told that it didn't need an MOT for 3 years.

Then I broke my ankle so the car was laid up for a while and when I tried to tax online it insisted I needed an MoT.

Called and spoke to a helpful guy at DVLA (yes, there is at least one of them there) about it but he insisted that VOSA who did the test and the LVLO who had registered the car were wrong and so I had to MOT the car.

The worrying thing is that if I hadn't laid the car up I could have renewed the tax before the first MOT was due and driven "illegally" for almost a year.

This has been covered extensively on locostbuilders, & I myself fell foul of the DVLA "one half doesn't know what the other half is doing" & finished up MoTing the first Furore F1 unecessarily for 3 years after SVA.
Since IVA this has been made much clearer, if you get an IVA test, then whether on a new reg, an age related or a Q plate there is definitely no requirement for MoT until 3 years, same as a new car - TTBOMK this is unequivocal. If anyone challenges this, you need to persue it thro' DVLA, VOSA etc
