Open Water and Pool Swimming Watches

I'm starting to train for an open water swim but want to keep track of the distance, anyone have experiences of certain watches/Garmin's, looking at this but don't know how good they are for open water swimming:

Nothing to add (sorry!) but I'm keeping an eye on this thread as I'll need something similar!

You need the 910 for swimming, although there may be swim-specific watches that are better. See dcrainmaker for really useful reviews.

I use a Finis Swimsense in the pool and it's great, measuring strokes, distance and time and then other metrics from that data. You can build your own displays as well, for example when I'm swimming mine shows me distance swum, strokes per length and pace. The Finis Swimsense has no GPS though, so can't measure distance in open water. However, most open water swimming lakes have marked courses with buoys, and because the distances are much longer than lengths of a pool, it's easy to count. My two local lakes have 400, 800 and 1500m loops. Because of that, in the lake I just use a stopwatch.
