whats the difference between the 3.6 and the 3.8 rs engines? (other than 200cc!)

is the difference worth the cost?

are parts difficult to come by for 3.8's?

any advice appreciated.

(the engine is to be supercharged at a later date by the way)

currently running a 3.8 having had 3.6 in the past..i don't think the extra cost is worth it personally..

You should contact Colin Belton at www.9mracing.co.uk
He has extensive knowledge of tuning the 3.8 and has also carried out supercharger conversions.

Hi Marc
Define the extra cost ? If you had a worn top end on a 3.6 and wished to build it as a 3.8 the extra cost on barrell/piston kits is negligble. The extra cost comes in changing valves, squish on cyl heads etc to suit the increased capacity.

However the car you are interested in already has a 3.8 engine but not just a 3.8 it is a full factory RS engine with all that it entails i.e blueprinted, hand finished, conrods weight matched, pistons weight matched, lighter & stronger rods & pistons, bigger valve area, RS cams, RS Fueling etc etc etc
And this is already in a car so the cost difference lies in finding a comparable 993 with the same options [X51 excluded] in the same condition & miles and comparing the prices.
A 993 with X51 and RS Flywheel/clutch certainly drives fantastically. Phil Raby has just done a "Tried & tested" feature on this car and it should be in 911&PW Nov issue
