Diabetes and sugar - no surprise!
Discussion
Newsnight now on (but on iPlayer if missed) is reporting on a new World wide study suggesting a direct link between sugar and diabetes, irrespective of bodyweight and obesity.
To me, from all my reading - and with a mother who died of the complications from Type 2 Diabetes - this fits well into the "No s$&@ Sherlock!" category but does support the idea denied by the "Sugar Nutrition Uk" producers' lobby group (what a surprise) that excess calories, esp. excess calories from sugar and sudden spikes in insulin etc. from high (short time span) sugar intake, e.g cans of Coke, does increase risk/incidence.
The study suggests that in populations studied an extra 150Kcal a day increases risks in the population by 0.1% but that if those 150Kcals are from sugar the rate increase is up to 1.1%. That's not a lot of junk intake really, plus they pointed out that we need to consider sugars present/hidden in all the food we eat.
