991 GT3 #9000 rpm
Discussion
Completely different PDK
Engine is a bespoke motorsports block, and the basis for the next gen Cup engine. Dry sump.
Yes, it's not the DFI 9A1 and it's not the Mezger. It's a new engine!
- RPM to 10K, redline 9 dead, 3.8L engine. Power is north of 450hp but they wouldn't say exactly.
- No PDCC, no PTV *at least not in this car
- New rear wing, very similar to 997.2 wing, but up close it's more refined
- Air scoop is beautiful, center feeding
- Car is running Dunlop Sport MAXX, 245/20 front 305/20 rear
- Car retains traditional 3 piece muffler, identical side mufflers as before but looks like a new, smaller center.
- New brake system, front caliper is ENORMOUS, disc is alternating drilled size.
- New recaro seats, foldable (not one piece), car was a Clubsport version fitted with the rear cage
- Ring times are right around 7.30
- Center locks
- ESC (electronic stability control), TC, sport exhaust, PDK-S (on the center console)
- Wide body chassis from C4
- rear control arms look like the ones in the 997 GT cars
More information (corrections) and perhaps a vid, later.

P N R D disappointing to see
It's a sad world we live in, when this is considered acceptable in a car that is supposed to be 'driver focused'.How can a car that's faster around a track be less driver focused than one with a manual box? Modern autos let you keep your car in gear until you decide to pull the paddle, even if that means you want to drive around on the rev limiter; so they're not taking away any options for the driver, they're just making their progress even faster. Each downshift will be perfectly matched and each up-shift will be significantly faster than any driver could safely manage in a manual.
I do still think that manual gearboxes have their place in cars, but a decent PDK/DSG/MCT/DCT gearbox will give the 'focused driver' a faster drive.
/controversial.

The extra interaction and concentration needed to hook up a nice, rev-matched gearshift is part of the pleasure of driving for me. Take that away and you've lost something, something that would add even more to a fantastic car like a GT3.
If you want the absolute fastest 911 surely a GT2 RS/Turbo S is the place to go? The GT3, to me, has always represented the one that was for people who really like driving, not going super fast (although it did that too).

I can sympathise with people hating torque converter autos, because they truly are the last thing anyone wants in a driver's car. However, a double clutch system is not a torque converter automatic, it's effectively the latest generation of roboticised manual transmission. I haven't tried the Porsche PDK system, but I have tried a double clutch box in the current M3 and I loved it. I confess, it's a shame not to give people the option of a manual, but that would mean substantial re-engineering of the gearbox and unless there's a box in the range that can handle the GT3's power and torque, I can understand it on cost grounds, especially given the percentage of people buying cars like this with manual boxes. That said, I expect the 991 turbo will exceed these figures, so is that going to be PDK only now?...

I think you're getting your meanings wrong with the phrase, driver focused. A driver focused car in my view, will aim to give the driver maximum involvement in operating it and the gear shift traditionally gives a lot of tactile involvement to the driver, in addition to the manually rev-matching aspect...So taking that away from the driver is taking a huge part of enjoyment of a road car. Most road driving to my knowledge doesn't happen in Time Attack mode.../controversial.

In a straight line yes. On a track the GT3 will be faster. People buy the GT3 to do serious track work and race competetively. Dual clutch transmissions are faster on track than a manual shift. Why would Porsche not use the transmission that is going to be best suited to the intended use of the GT3 - going round a track as fast as possible?EK993 said:

There are people who will still argue that the 4 speed box on the 930 Turbo is more than adequate
Faster, and safer without taking away driving skill. What is not to like?

Absolutely. Driver focused and fast are two different things, and they often mean opposite things in a car. Manuals are usually slower, but they involve the driver more. The same is often true of some of the latest driver aids for example. Generally speaking, my 2-Eleven with its treaded tyres, driven by me with bare hands and no earplugs in is a lot more 'driver focused' than the single seater I used to race, which involved gloves, earplugs, big sticky slick tyres, downforce etc. Road cars aren't about lap times, they're about fun and pleasure, at least for me.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
