In 1952 old Beemers known as 'Baroque Angels' had V8 engines that were the first mass produced units using alloy blocks and heads. The first were 2.6ltr 100bhp using twin Zenith carbs, they eventually rose to 3.2ltr 160bhp and were capable of 118mph and 0-60 in 13 secs. It's rumoured BMW sold this design to Buick, I've seen cutaway drawings and it looks pretty familiar to me

I remember reading about the history of the rover V8 in Land Rover Owner a few years ago, and that was roughly what they said - started out as a BMW V8 (though BMW may apparently have bought the design off GM), became the Buick V8 and was then sold to Rover...
