Broadband for your Car

Do you need broadband internet services while you're driving? Delphi think you do.

As if mobile phones weren't enough of a distraction now we can look forward to people trying to play computer games while driving five foot from your rear end. Still, as long as they're not exceeding the speed limit while they're doing it, because as we all know that's the sole cause of all danger on the roads...

I presume this is something new like OFDM and way off into the distance, given that they cant even get 3G working properly!

I can see its value being in location based services, hotels restaurants etc. Perhaps when driving in an unfamiliar place streaming movies of hotel interiors could give you an idea of the quality of the place before arriving.

Its probably going to be more commercially used than consumer used, its value for vehicle inspectors, drive by valuations etc is unsurpassed.

But won't this also mean your mobile's signal could be constantly monitored and location identified ( a 3G feature is apparently signal 'mapping' - identifying the phone's precise location)...and therefore distance travelled with time (i.e. speed monitoring? )
...sinister or what?

In a word yes, it is constantly monitored. However, using a standard digital mobile, or even an analogue one they can triangulate your position using 3 recievers.

So the moral of the story is, if you rob a bank, and they know its you, dont call your mates to let them know you're going on holiday for a while!

Quite why people insist on having 'home entertainment systems' in their car is a mystery to me. What is wrong with the usual radio/tape player?

Only yesterday, I saw some chap watching a DVD while driving in a 30mph limit. - very odd and potentially very dangerous.

Thats supposed to be illegal! Thats why all in car TV systems installed by manufacturers switch off at 3mph!

I thought they were only in the passenger wells. ie keep little jimmy occupied whilt mummy drives. I personaly favour tranc-darts. As an aside the car-sick pills my sister took when we were young used to just knock her out, usinb the principle if you're unconcious you can't feel car-sick.
