I've just replaced the fuel rail and I'm having difficulty getting the damn thing to sit back onto the injectors fully. Does anyone here have any tips or is it just a silicon spray and force thing?

Is it maybe easier if I remove the injectors from the manifold, fit them to the rail first and then re-fit the rail/injectors together? Grrrr, all tips gratefully received.

First change the seals at both ends- the old ones are unlikely to seal again. Then push the injectors down into the manifold as far as they will go (this is further than normal). Then put the fuel rail over the injectors, and pull the injectors back into the rail one by one and carefully align the clip slots with the base of the collar on the fuel rail. Make sure all the clips go into the slots. A bit of lube will help.

thanks for the tips...

...and talking about the fuel rail, can any of you tell me where the pipe coming out the fuel pressure regulator (wiper motor side) is supposed to connect. Mine merely hung down the back of the engine. That can't be right...can it?

The important thing is to make sure that the ports in the fuel rail and the ports in the inlet manifold are clean, free from crud deposits, if they need cleaning care needs to be taken to avoid scoring the sealing face. New seals are essential, the old ones will be hard from age / temperature / petrol and wont reseal properly. Use a small amount of lubricant on both o rings like a silicon based grease or petroleum jelly, a minute smear is all that is required and will greatly reduce to forces required to make them fit, then you should have no problems at all.

Are you referring to the vacuum pipe? This regulates the fuel line pressure to be 2.5bar above the plenum chamber pressure. From memory it has a T off from the pipe going to the distributor vacuum advance.

No it connects to a small nipple on the stepper motor housing and faces towards the driver, if the hose is loose or perished renew it.

Doesn't the stepper motor nipple also feed the dizzy vacuum then? It seems ages since my car was standard in the good old days! :-) I'm struggling to remember what the other take off nipple on the trumpet base fed before it went to my recirc / dump valve! :-)

Aahhh yes that's right, I remember now. That hole is now plugged on my plenum! Fancy verifying my ECU install manual I'm writing for the sprint mag?

My dizzy was connected the to the stepper nipple so the vacuum worked in reverse for boost retard rather than vacuum advance, hence the confusion

As I've been looking through the old threads with regards to injectors, I keep coming across recommendations for Vectra B red-top injectors. These are dirt cheap here in germany (even brand new) so I was thinking, while I'm at it, why not swap the old original dirty Lucas jobs for new but...

...the replies in topics seem to be contradictory. Can someone tell me once and for all if I definitely need a re-map after fitting these OR will they run 'just as good' as the Lucas dirty old ones even without a re-map? My problem is that being here in Germany I don't have access to a Mr Mark Adams.

Although I'll be over in the UK with Chimp (hopefully) in May where I can make an appointment, I still need to use the car in the meantime.

Thanks.

I use the Vectra injectors.

I am running Megasquirt now but when I first fitted them I went to Austec Racing where they put the car on a rolling road then tweaked the fuel pressure up to give the best fuel map and performance.

I doubt for one moment you would get the same fuel flow for a given injector opening time, so a remap would be needed. There is a guy in the Netherlands who programs the 14CUX.

I will have a set of almost new Bosch red injectors if you want them 0280150431 (350cc @ 3bar), they are about 3000 miles old from new, yes new not reconditioned. Only reason for replacement is that I need some Green Giants (440cc) with my supercharger, the reds aren't big enough for what I need but are the right ones for any naturally aspirated engine with a great spray pattern and idle control. Thanks....

These will be available in about 2 weeks when the new ones arrive from usa. cheers
