That is the same spec as a car my dad used to have a few years back. He added cup mirrors, colour coded the rear spolier and changed the wheels for the cup type. First porsche I ever drove and loved it to bits .. Thanks for the trip down memory lane beer

Have they re-surfaced the Duke's Pass?

It a lovely bit of road but not done it in our Porsche yet.

Hello fellow 928 Scot.

How was it over such a tight and twisty road?

It's not my fault the weather's been total jobbie up till now.

I will get it on a run before it gets chopped in though. Would be good to see how it compares to the GT being but an old S4.

Duke's Pass is my local bit of road/rubble - I last went over in early December on the bike and it was in pretty poor condition, apart from a section on the Aberfoyle side that was resurfaced a couple of years ago. It's been closed most of the time over the winter due to snow/ice so I expect it's best tackled on off-road rubber ATM. Need to get the rust off the 911's discs so will go for a play and see fit like.

The Gt is a dream to drive, having owned almost all air cooled stuff, 2.7 lux right through to
Vario 993s, they just dont touch it for comfort or its Gt cool. The auto 928 could not
be a different car, this is said often but really cannot be stressed enough. It handles with real finesse
and sophistication, I have kept it stock and had an X pipe and rmb fitted which makes it
sound incredible, and it managed a superb 356 bhp on dyno, the stock quoted figures for the
Gt were always on the conservative side. They take a lot of commitment to keep right though,
timing belt & water pump with all the bits cost me £1200, spent at least 4k on servicing and preventative
stuff in 4 years. I drove a manual GTS quite recently and my car had more low down grunt,
I do like the flared arches on the GTS though the GT is just as collectable now in my opinion
and the numbers are getting lower and lower ever year.

The pass is not great though it would be harsher in another car...

Its been an excellent ownership experience and they are quite an eyeful when detailed on the road
today, the shape is fat and the nose long, I cannot recall any other sports
car that feels as comfortable or stable at high speed, granted new stuff does, but at 120 mph its rock steady and
with masses in reserve and it will sit there until the fuel runs out...which will
be sooner than you think...and V power is not cheap is it...But its
not a look at me car, its a very specific informed choice and a focused well
seasoned drivers car...

Great looking car, and it's amazing how well they've aged, as the basic design is over 30 years old!

I'm sure I followed you over the Dukes Pass in my 928 once? I loved the car and the runs, I'd still have it if I had time to drive it.

Lovely looking GT. Does make me miss my S4. smile

The design was well ahead of its time, and comes from a time when
Porsche were Porsche, not like now, lego sets with mulitplugs attached.

First time over the pass in that car, I stay very local, 10 mins from
Aberfoyle, truly spoiled with some of the best roads in the country on
the doorstep, the thought of owning a big engine like this in a big city would
be frustrating.....

All of the 32v 928s are fantastic cars, but when they stopped production the 928 cost nearly ninety thousand pounds, in 1995!

It wasnt so much that they were afraid to drive it, but they were afraid to finance it!

I wish you guys would stop posting these threads. I have to keep telling myself not to go after a 928, the last time I managed to convince myself that it would be a money pit and the manual gearbox is not great. Then I was walking along the road about a week later and an S4 with the x pipe exhaust mod jobbie drove past. It sounded awesome in the true sense of the word, the Pork V8 is still my favourite sounding Pork out of the whole lot of them and one of the best sounding engines ever made IMHO*.

  • - I raced at Silverstone next to Mark Chilton's car in amongst 996 cup, 997 cup, 993RSR (I think), 964/993/968 race cars. Mark's car sounded the best to me and was hugely memorable.
