Which XC Hardtail for a grand?

I'm thinking about getting another ride2work pushiron but know pretty much fack all about what kits lies where in the pecking order of goodness.

Specialized Rockhopper Comp Disc 2008

Apart from some initial problems with the rear wheel not being strong enough for my size/weight (6'4" - 100kg) it's been brilliant. 5 years of reasonably hard use and it's still going strong but probably needs some money spending on the drivetrain now. But I'd rather just sell it on and get a new one.

Limited to buying from Edinburgh Cycles and these are the ones that jump out at me.

I'm baffled as to whether one stands out as having a better spec than the other or if I@m missing something else they have on offer.

Also, what's the story with the 29" wheel craze, are these functionally better or just marketing bks?

Any input greatly appreciated.

I was in a similar position but didn't want to follow the 29 trend. Looked at the Cannondale SL2 which had a good solid spec but went with a Whyte 805. Rode them both on the street outside their Newcastle branch, but it was the Whyte which fitted better and just felt 'right'

Very close but the Carve edges ahead. A 29er rolls better and smooths out bumps. For a big bloke like yourself, it's ideal. For a wee chap like me, no.

I had that headset on my cube and it's awful, if you ever want to replace it, get one of these:

It's hard to find a replacement, but these fit perfect and have sealed bearings instead of caged ones
