Rang BMW for the cost of a replacement battery and they came back with a cost of almost £220. It would also need programming to the car!!!!

So, lets assume I'm happy with old technology and want to fit a Bosch S5. Euro car parts list two options, the S5 096 and S5 100. The latter is 15mm less tall than the former but both apparently fit. I can also get the S5 100 from Costco at just over £75 so it's a very competitive price - is this is a suitable option?

Anything I need to know about swapping the battery? Will I have any warning light issues after cutting power?

Annoyingly, the DSC light came on a week or so ago. Could this possibly have anything to do with the battery getting very low?

It's the original battery and as the car has only done around 10k miles over almost 6 years it's lasted pretty well!

The Z4M uses an AGM battery due to its location and lack of a vent.

Does that mean the Bosch isn't a suitable replacement?

I think the top Varta (they make them for Bosch) is the right size and AGM. AGM are preferable and hold charge longer but charge at higher voltage - perhaps this is where the 'recoding' comes from.

The original would have a vent pipe from what I've seen. Not actually looked at the one on car yet. The BMW guy just said the replacement is "new technology"!!!!

Z4mc definitely has a vent pipe, on the coupe at least the Bosch S5 connects to the pipe, fits without issue and is slightly lighter than stock.

The coding is for the IBS, a clever box of tricks that monitors the battery and tells figures out how best to charge it.
When you swap batteries, you need to update the IBS so it'll start to check and measure what to do again.

Perfect. Thanks for the info, I'll pick one up lunchtime.

One small issue to look out for: there's a very slim chance the car will go into 'transport' mode, and things like the air-con and blower will stop working; this is easily reset though.

Done! No issues at all - even the windows opened and closed correctly.

Actually ended up doing it twice (mostly!). Was all fitted and working about an hour ago with trim back in place. Then looking at the BMW battery I'd removed I noticed that there was a vent plug that I hadn't refitted to the new battery! Typical!

Cheers guys.
