Think I've broke 5th gear...

Car has been sat in the garage for the past 6 weeks, and when I came to reverse it out yesterday it wouldnt move. I assumed it was just the brakes may have been damp when I put it away so had seized a little, so gave it a few revs and it let go at about 4k revs.
It made a sort of bang as it let go, and jerked backwards.
Anyway, now when I put my foot down in 5th, it does a sort of judder and doesnt accelerate properly, as if its grinding on the gear.
Is it possible my method of getting the car out has done some major damage to 5th?

Can you hold the gearstick and feel the vibrations through it?It made a sort of bang as it let go, and jerked backwards.

Hi Paul , 5th gear , 3 to 4 k rev range is right at peak torque and probably the highest load in 5th , I think something either bent or loose , grinding noises tend to be loose hub nut related but could it also be pickup on the disc causing a vibration . Question is what caused the crack when you moved ?
If parked with handbrake off then it can only be pads sticking to disc , I would be tempted to check around that areas.

Unless you cracked the car free in 5th I can't see why you have broken that but from your description it does appear 5th could be spinning in the shaft. The splines on this gear are pretty small for the job. You could try lifting the car, put on the handbrake and gently try pulling away in 5th, if the gear is spinning on the shaft you will know soon enough!

I have a damaged 4th gear. trust me if the gear is damaged you would know about it! its not the same symptoms as described here.Ok so I have had the rear wheels off this aft, hub nuts are tight, removed brake pads and everything seems ok.
Went out for another drive and noticed a couple of things, if I accelerate slowly through 5th then I dont get no noises, its just as normal, however if I plant my foot at anything over 3k rpm (only in 5th) the car judders and makes a 'clunking' noise coming from the rear passenger wheel area, so i'm still thinking gearbox, even though I can't work out why!
The car drives perfectly normal in every other gear which is why I dont think its brakes or anything.
But what's confusing me is if its 5th gear, why only above 3k rpm when accelerating hard and not all the time?

Ideally no noise and the engine should stall. It's not an ideal test as the gearing will encourage it to stall but if the gear is turning on the shaft then hopefully you can put enough torque through it which should make it spin if it's broken. If it is then you will hear it clear as day!
