As a viewed my friends M3 parked up in the middle of town last night, I got wondering. What happened to the end of BMW as a brand, thanks to all the OBDC thefts?

It was huge only a few months ago, I've not heard of any recalls of fixes from BMW, yet it seems all but forgotten now?

They had a recall, but insisted its not a problem, so they decided not to publicise it much.

they are all being sold to unlucky people
there have been a couple of cries for help on here recently who've bought BMWs that turned out to be stolen and have had it brutally explained to them that there thousands of £ are gone and there is no come back what so ever

There's huge thread in the BMW section.

In summary:

There is no recall.
Your car can be updated at the next service to update the software to "further enhance the security".

I love that like a windows service pack, cars can now be updated, how long before they nag you about the latest updates? And not to jailbreak the setting?

A lot of ICE systems are Windows-embedded based, so in theory could be reverse-engineered pretty easily!

What does the fix do? Block programming a key while the car is "locked"?

I don't know the specific details. Rather than give you the wrong information it might be best if you checked out the long thread in the BMW forum.

I think it (a) blocks the windows being opened via forcing the locks, (b) prevents the CAS security weakness being exploited, so no more adding keys as easily as before.

Not had mine done yet. I have gap insurance. hehe

That, or still allow programming but set the alarm off - that way you can rescue cars where all keys have been lost without having to rip the ECU's out.

A lot of cash machines are Windows NT, too. thumbup

I saw inside the back of one once. Basically a PC in there, and some tubes, and what looked like fuel filters strangely (I'm assuming for the anti-theft dye or something).

Most cash machines (ATMs) suck the notes out of a cassette using vacuum. The fuel filter (and it really is an old fuel filter) is used as an air filter, to stop paper dust being sucked up the vacuum lines into the vacuum pump.
