Ok, please humour me guys.....
If you had 2 cars in your budget range, both of which were basically sound and comparable age, which would you go for.....
Car 1 - low miles and owners, mechanically sound, but cosmetically needing attention...
Car 2 - higher miles, more owners, good interior and paint, but couple of mechanical issues to sort out....
And the other problem? I've only managed to physically see Car 2.......
Aaaaaah poooo.....sorry, waste of time....when I see it written down i realise its an impossible call......

)Go and see car 1, the cosmetics may be less serious than you think.
Personally, I'd go with the mechanically sound one - you can drive a car with a few stone chips/cracked dash etc and still enjoy it, but having a beautiful car stuck in the garage because a wheel fell off is silly!

dont let mileage influence you too much. Cars are for driving and in my opinion tvrs are better for being driven and well maintained. I cover about 6000 miles per annum as this my second car but I use it for continental touring for about 3000 miles pa.
It seems better for being used regularly and has now covered about 35000 miles(97 450). Lets face it if cars are reliable people will probably put more miles on clock than car which stands a lot and then is not probably reliable

Drive both and but buy neither of them. You are falling into the same old trap of buying the first/second one you see. There are dozens out there for sale, so have a good look around first.
Go to see one for a bit more money and hopefully even better condition and make the seller a silly offer. You've got nothing to lose and you might score a bargain.

Peter, in lots of ways you are correct, in others maybe not
There are indeed dozens out there, but it all comes down to money and time, neither of which am I prepared to devote too much of.....regretably...
I have indeed adopted your latter approach, but as yet it hasn't borne fruit yet.
