I remember schlepping up to Camden on a Tuesday night for a spot of banding it up. Me & my mate sat in The Good Mixer leafing through flyers trying to work out who to go & see.
We narrowed it down to two: a band called Betty Serviert who were rumoured to be going places & another bunch called Catatonia (50p in). We went for the first one. This was a week before "Sweet Catatonia" came out.
To make it worse, the other band were awful. The singer who looked & sounded like Jeremy Hardy kept huffing into the mic between songs as if he were suffering for his art. In the end, in the finest traditions of men in flat caps & pints of mild, a voice came over from the back - "Get on with it you w
ker".
