Quick Question . . .

I have a Nikon 18-70 lens which came with my D70 kit . . . can I put a filter on the front without causing vignetting ?

I'd like a skylight or similar for general protection . . . but really would like a polariser and perhaps an R72 (InfraRed) . . .

I presume it must be ok to fit one filter otherwise why have the lens end threaded ?

Where do people source filters from, my local shops have a non existant selection and I've yet to find an online source that has any selection in lens filter diameters . . .

TIA

D70 Helpline calling...
From my exerience even one filter can cause vignetting at 18mm, so watch out.
I got my UV and polarising filters from eBay (Hoya, new) for about £7 each, but it's the luck of the draw of course. Search for filter type and size and see what you find.

I have the exact same kit (D70 + 18-70mm) and bought a circular polarizer and a skylight from this guy on ebay. He obviously has a load of them because that's a new batch! They arrived no probs and work perfectly should you wish to try and win that auction (I also recommend auction stealer!) FYI - I paid about £19 for the two filters (Hoya's cost a lot more in the shops!)... I can recommend the seller.

Back to your question! Well, I have used the cir polarizer at 18mm and didn't have any vignetting but I put both the cir pol and the skylight on together and DID get vignetting (just me being lazy and not swapping filters just stacking them!). So - yes you will get vignetting if you stack them but individually, they are fine.

It isn't too much of a bind to fix in Photoshop and the CameraRAW plugin comes with a vignetting setting to help reduce it (IME it's limited in its usefulness but the clone tool works very well).

HTH.

Cheers,
Phil

Had to source my infra-red from America, couldn't find one over here... but that was a few years back and times may well have changed.

BTW Make sure you have a rock solid tripod for the infra red. Great fun though.
