evening,

how would the two cars compare in running costs? understand the cayman s would ordinarily be pitted against the z4m but I have a z4 3.0si coupe.

servicing, mpg etc?

the one thing I've never really liked about the z4 is the steering feel, and having considered a z4m to get round this, it occurred to me that I probably only have a couple more years of 2 seaters, so trying something a bit different is a good idea.

anyone swapped one for the other and have direct comparison?

i'm currently looking looking at z4 coupes and stnadard caymans. no real insight for you but both cars seem to have plus and negative points, engine going bang in cayman s due to IMS failers being a one. There dosnt seem to be an awful lot in it in terms of running costs from what i gather.

one thing i am interested in is road noise, people seem to suggest both are quite loud.

IMS is not really a problem with the Cayman S engine. Bore scoring is however.

Personally, I got a bit bored with my Cayman S. A bit too sterile and lacked character.

I had a Cayman S and I've got a Z4m coupe now.. Z4m is quicker, it also has more character and the engine is of course absolutely fabulous. The ride is brutally harsh though - certainly much harsher than my Cayman was on PASM. Interiors similar sizes and quality. Both very practical - good boots and cabin space, though the Cayman nudges it. Z4M coupe is quite rare, whereas the Cayman isn't. Both similar running costs, though the Z4 is cheaper to buy by quite a margin.

Driving characteristics are very different as you'd expect - mid engine versus front, and don't forget the Z4 has an LSD. Cayman is a scalpel whereas the Z4 is more blunt, quite gruff at times, but ultimately more rewarding.

IMS can be a problem on all according to specialist cars of Malton. Changes were made but they are not immune to failure.

Technically speaking, yes, there is a chance of failure. However, I don't think it's that prevalent, at least compared to cylinder scoring. Hartec seems to support this view.
