Its quite normal to hear the sort of sound you describe - nothing to worry about. The sound is more pronounced if you go for some hi-flow airfilters like K&N or ITG etc.
There is an ECU upgrade for your car which gives you higher torque in the lower gears. Available from your lotus dealer or a similar upgrade can be bought from a supplier like www.pukesprit.de There is also a RACE ecu that gives more power but that will void any warranty you have. Also, the race ecu exceeds the torque rating of the transmission so there is high risk of transmission damage with this mod. I've had the hi-torque ecu for 3 yrs and i'm perfectly happy with it. No transmission issues so far at 78,000 miles.
Your 03 will already have a great sounding exhaust (centre exit, right?). There are lots of exhaust options - most popular for these cars is probably to run straight pipes - ie from the cats straight to the back of the car without a silencer.
Suggest you finish your running in period and get used to driving the car before you start modifying.
