Hoping for some help from the PH massive...

Mods: If this would be better in the appropriate sub-forum, please move it smile

My dear old mum is selling her RX-8 but unsure how to pitch it, so she asked me, and I'm asking you hehe

It's mostly unremarkable - '04, 5-speed manual 192PS, leather, nav, 1 owner, never tracked, FSH etc. Equivalent cars are selling from £1500 on Autotrader up to about £3500 on the classifieds here. She's been offered about £2k as PX against a new car.

But.

It's been warrantied since she bought it new. Good job really, because it's been in and out of the dealer like a fiddler's elbow. In the last year alone it's had £11k worth of warranty work done, including a complete engine replacement (~£5k), clutch and gearbox.

She understands that this won't really affect the resale price, but surely a car with a brand new engine and transmission has to be worth more than one that's still hanging on to the 10 year old original ones?

The other point she made - although I have no idea if this is valid or not - is that the engine was a £5k bill. If another owner wanted a virtually new engine, would there be any mileage in offering an otherwise normal car for spares/repair?

If it was me I'd just cut my losses and price it at the top end of the private listings with full details of all the work done, but she really feels she's being hard done by.

Opinions, please?

It's only worth what someone will pay for it, and unfortunately all the extra work won't make too much difference if we're completely honest.

May get a bit more than other examples due to the engine, but you might be waiting a while for a sale rather than a quick turn around.

Why does think she is being hard done by? All these repairs were done on warranty so it is not as if she has paid all that money out is it? If she prices it at the top of the classifieds prices then my guess is it won't sell. When it comes down to it is it is still a 9 year old rx8 and they are ten a penny.

Why is she being hard done by? She didn't pay for the warranty work. Yes the car has a new engine, which could make the car more valuable than a similarly aged car with an old engine, but on the other side of the coin it's one of the older, less powerful and less desirable engines. The fact is, these cars have an inherently short lifespan, so they just aren't worth much. Even a good one will be unreliable, a pain to live with due to the "no short starts" thing, and the rotor tips just won't last.

To be honest £2k isn't the worst offer in the world for a trade part ex. A mate of mine ended up getting £600 from WBAC as he couldn't give his 65k mile 231 in the classifieds.

Get a compression test done and make it a big selling point in an ad.

Does the new engine come with a warranty with any validity left? If so, the two would be a big selling point on a used RX8.

The fact it's a 192 won't help though, although there's not as much difference between the two as people might think (and often make out).

I'd agree that 2 grand doesn't sound a terrible trade in valuation (although if it's against a £50K car it's possibly a bit mean).

I guess these are hard to shift and don't have much value - so take whatever you can for it! The part ex sounds tempting.

Absolutely spot on. I suppose what I was thinking is that a car like the RX-8 isn't something that you buy used from a car supermarket because 'it will do'. It's something you buy because you WANT an RX-8, and anyone enthusiastic enough to search out a 10 year old car like that would care that it had a new engine. Rose tinted glasses?

Again, I agree. However, if you were in the market for a specific car like that, and there was the choice between one at £2k and one at £3 or 4k with a brand new engine and gearbox, would you consider paying the extra?

Thanks. I'll mention the compression test and see if she's interested. I presume (although I don't know) the engine etc will come with the balance of the manufacturer's warranty - so either almost a year or almost 2 years, whichever Mazda offer.

Brand new engine? I'd buy it at the price you're suggesting!

I'd say that's pretty good value, but then they are still risky, even with a new engine!
