Evening all,
Got a squeaky wheel. What would the wheel bearing be from?
MOT is booked for Friday, would a wheel bearing fail it?
its the nearside front on a 1982 280i

Hi Mate..Which wheel is it..Front or rear?...It will only fail the MOT if there is noticeable play in the wheel..They normally rumble or vibrate and not squeak...
Its best to change both sides..Here is the Rear wheel bearing kit which has two seals per side..The hub nut will need a lot of force to undo it..234lbs plus torque and probably a 4ft extension bar..It also needs to be re-tightened to that as well..Replace the split pins in the hub nuts also...

I believe the front wheel bearings are Granada MK2 2.8i

Hi Mark, perhaps it isnt the bearing then. it comes from the front passenger side and is a noticable squeak per revolution of wheel. the car has been sorned since oct and just out to play today, i had done about 25 miles when it started and went home. 30 miles total and it didnt get any worse. Any ideas anyone and can i fix it before friday?

Does it go away when you brake?..It could be a partially seized brake caliper or slightly warped disc...Might be worth jacking up the front and checking for play in the wheel..I think wheel bearing's can squeal if they are dry but if they are failing they will rumble..Check the Ball joints for movement..Check the wheel by holding bottom and top to see if there is any rocking movement by pushing the top in and pulling the bottom out at the same time and then alternate the movement..Check to see if anything is rubbing also..

To confirm Zig's idea, I have had a 'squeak..squeak' type noise, one per wheel rev, and it turned out to be a stiff front brake caliper rubbing on the disc at a certain point. A good clean around the brake pad fixed it for me. (not on my TVR, but same principle...)

Wheel bearings typically rumble or groan, low frequency noises, not a squeek...

So I would check the front brakes first, then the rears....jack up each wheel and try spinning it. While you're at it you can check for excessive bearing play...

aye you were right. the pads rubbing on each revolution and squeaking. didnt have a chance to clean it up. put some anti squeak stuff on it, hopefully that'll quieten it down till after the MOT on Friday and hopefully the tester wont notice. Would tgat fail the MOT though?

Get it looked at after the MOT..It might just be lack of use and may just be sticking a little but always be vigilant when it comes to brakes...Ziga

yeah, was looking at getting some ebc pads, yellow or green (not sure which) and new discs in may, the present ones have hardly any wear so hopefully it is down to sitting around for four months doing nothing! Glad it isnt a MOT fail though.
